Commemorating girls' first menstruation
One of the uniqueness of the Sri Lankan tradition is that when a girl experiences her first menstruation, she will be locked up and locked in a room in the house, and is prohibited from being seen by men, even though she is a biological brother, she is kept with her sister until the day that has passed. determined, on her lucky day, the girl is covered all over with a white cloth and watched from outside the predetermined room
Next the girl is bathed in herbal concoctions and sprinkled with flowers by the washing lady or her mother, after the bath the girl lights an oil lamp and praises the elders, and wears new clothes and gold decorations, and continues with a celebration event where everyone rejoices at this event
Checking the virginity of the bride
Sex before marriage in Sri Lanka is very popular, so for a respectable marriage in terms of virginity it is very important, in the morning after the first night, the mother of the groom will check the bridal chamber to see the blood stains from the white cloth which signify that the girl whose son married is fine, if the white cloth looks bloody then it is a sign that the girl is still a virgin and vice versa if the white cloth is still plain, this indicates that the bride is no longer holy
Pregnancy cravings can't be ignored
There is bad luck when ignoring a woman who is desirous or dissatisfied, they believe that this will affect the baby later, physically even though he has not been born, for a pregnant woman to be given happiness she does not need anything until the time of giving birth
Keeping the door open after the funeral
Until the seventh day of burial the door of the house must remain open, because the released spirit will be able to freely enter and leave without being trapped in the house, the body must be monitored until the time of burial.
Thovil (Sri Lankan Exorcism)
Sri Lanka believes that when a person is sick then an evil spirit is the cause, he will disturb someone, so to remedy this, a night event called thovil will be held which aims to expel the evil spirit from the patient, a colorful event This color is very complete with demon dancers, wearing demon masks and waving torches in hands and also a bonfire, there are also traditional songs and drum beating.
