Hello friends,

I consider every event in my life as a best moment. Most of the time an event connects with a celebration and it has a very high probability of being a happy pill. As a little child and as a secondary school student singing songs was my favorite event.when i was growing up as a big girl i loved dress up nicely and go to weddings and parties. When both my heart and the brain getting matured I loved events that spread happiness into less happy places more.

After coming to the campus I loved every event there. Among all those "KOLOMTHOTA NATHA MAHALU WEE" art festival made a deep beautiful memory in my heart. After arguing with those mesmerizing events in my life, I thought of sharing one beautiful event with this contest. So are you ready to read my best event story?? 🤗 This is it.

It was Thai Pongal day and Why??

In 24 years of my life time I’ve never celebrated Thai Pongal or even never seen how they celebrate it until enter my university. Everything was new and fresh for me. So what is Thai Pongal?? Thai Pongal is a harvesting festival, celebrated by Hindus all around the world. The purpose of celebrating Thai Pongal is to say thank you for mother nature who supported farmers in their farming. They respectfully say thank you to the sun, the rain, the soil, water and as well as buffaloes and cows. I see Thai Pongal as the pinnacle of our humanity.

How we got prepared for the event

Our Tamil friends, who celebrate Thai Pongal in each and every year, was the back born of this event. They organized it vey well and taught us how to support them.

We supported them for Thai Pongal decorations as well as making flower garlands, and other things like making money for the event, inviting academic and non academic staff to participate.

Finally it was Thai Pongal day

We decided to wear sarees and the boys wore shirts and sarongs. Normally I don’t like sarees but I wore. Early in the morning Our Tamil friends, drew Kolam on the floor at the entrance of the faculty building. “Kolam” means hand- drawn design made with lime powder, something specific for Thai Pongal. I was really amazed by “Kolam”.

Middle of that “Kolam” there was a pot over a wooden fire which was ready for preparing “Pongal rice”. “Pongal rice” is made by newly harvested paddy, with milk jaggery and plums. After preparing it the first part of that food was sacrificed for the God- Soorya. Our Hindus friends sang some thanks giving prayers for the Sun god. Gratitude was everywhere!!

Then the time came for eating Pongal rice. Not only Pongal rice but also we ate some traditional foods of Hindus like Ulundu wade and Murukku. Everything was prepared by Hindus friends and they were really yummy.

After eating, the most joyful event came. we played some traditional games like "Aliyata Aha Thabeema" and "Kana Mutti Bindeema" The moment filled with joy and happiness. Some of our lectures and non academic staff members also joined with those games.

End of the event

More over Some dancing and singing performances added more colors to the event. No one can go wrong with such attractive performances. Finally we decided to finish the event with a fun game, musical chair competition. Among the participants who could not sit on a chair had to choose a chit and do whatever written in that chit. It was so funny and put a good end to the event.

What I learnt

Mainly I learnt two things. We are always indebted to nature. We can never pay off that debt. But at least if we can think seriously and thankfully about mother nature that’s our humanity. It’s the meaning and the message of Thai Pongal.

Our adults make a big mistake when we are little. At school traditional festivals, children are dressed up as Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims. That’s where the child’s mind enters that there is a division and difference between people. Do we need that?? We all are humans. We can celebrate anything we love anything we need. No differences!!

Couldn't agree more🥂

Couldn't agree more🥂

Ohh!! Let's share your opinion.

Thanks for the comment.😍

Yeah I totally agree with you. When we were little we didn't feel any difference but as we grew up, specially after the war, these separation was planted on our minds I think. It is normal that certain people are more sensitive to their own cultures but have to respect others' and if not it is a very triable. This division is one of the main reasons' that we are still a developing country and per my knowledge, one of the best solution is , removing this language barrier so all communities can communicate well with each other and problems could have been solved easily.
Sorry it went longer than I thought and looks bit philosophical 😄🙈

What you are saying is completely right. Films like Saroja, books like " Thiyunu Asipathaka Sewana Yata" tries to give this message. Thanks for this valuable opinion. 🤗

It's not so long but yeah it's philosophical. I love that philosophy anyway. 😄❤
