Jaffna Foods

I was always curious about the taste of real Jaffna food because we can't find the authentic flavours from every Tamil restaurant. Even I've tasted many tamil foods from " සයිවර් කඩ" , The food I've tasted in Jaffna is on the top of my list.

Here's a summary about my Jaffna food experience
As soon as we stepped on Jaffna the first we tried Was a cream bun.
It's not like the normal cream bun we have, it's triangular in shape sandwiched bun with cream, bigger than the usual but priced from 80 - 100 rupees.
It tasted so good and we tried it twice.

Next we tried Malayan cafe . It's one of the oldest restaurant in Jaffna. It's a vegetarian restaurant. we ordered our lunch from their. Lunch is served on Banana leaf . Per person it was around 300 rupees food is served as many time we want. That's the speciality I saw.

This meal consisted of a dhal curry, sambar, jackfruit mallum , a papadam , fried curd chillies and fried plantains.

While we were roaming around Jaffna fort we saw a small cart selling some delicious snack that we haven't seen before.

There were many items on the cart that we can select. This mouthwatering delicacy includes ulundu wadei, boiled chickpeas, batter fried banana, pakoda,manioc chips mixed together and they added a special curry sauce that I haven't tasted before. Also added tomato sauce , pieces of coconut, onion and small pieces of unripe mango 🤤.

Everything is loaded on a plate . One portion is 250 rupees . It is sharable and worth the price. we tried this from another place but It wasn't good enough like this one. If you visit Jaffna don't forget to try this.

Rio Ice-cream

Rio Ice-cream is bonded with Jaffna. If you visit Nallur kovil, Rio Ice-cream is In a walkable distance. There was ton of choices and it wasn't that easy to select one. I ordered a foluda drink and a jelly Ice-cream . Ice cream potion was huge. I can't exactly remember the prices but it was reasonable.

Out of all the places we tried " Nallur Bhavan" is our favorite food venue. It's also a vegetarian restaurant. On our second day in Jaffna we took our breakfast and dinner from there. For breakfast we tried String hoppers and Dosa. The whole meal was cheaper in price. Tasty and clean.

Food is served with a coconut chutney, sambar and kiri hodi. we could taste the authentic Jaffna taste from here. This restaurant is a famous restaurant in Jaffna.

For dinner we orderd Ghee dosa and parata. This was a good potion for the price.

Other than these we enjoyed a string hopper kottu from another vegetarian restaurant but I couldn't take any pictures of it. Throughout our time in Jaffna we only had vegetarian foods. Next time when I go to Jaffna I'm looking forward to try more foods others than vegetarian foods. I've heard Jaffna crab curry is a must try one.
