An Industrial visit - 5% for SL-charity

"Life was good, then one wanted a perfect IE project" This is how one of my group members captioned this photo. We were assigned to do a project for a module named, Industrial Engineering. For that, we should select a company, visit it, identify a bottleneck in the process and provide a simulation-based solution for that production.

IE is a huge section that is very important in manufacturing processes. It can be categorized into several sections like process study, safety and manufacturing, job design, ergonomics, and so on. The ultimate goal of this is to improve the efficiency of a process by managing resources. You may not believe that some companies change the whole layout to save one second in the average cycle time because it can gain a huge profit in the long run.

At the beginning of the project, one member suggested that "මචන් අපි මේක සුපිරියටම කරන්න ඕන." So we look for a pioneer company and got permission to visit Midas, workwear Sri Lanka. It is located in the BOI zone in Biyagama.

First, we had to get passes to enter the zone, and when we reached the factory. It is a huge factory that manufactures different types of gloves. We were taught about each and every step in the process and were able to visit all sections. The staff was very helpful. The process has several sections; knitting, turning and overlocking, checking, compound dipping, sorting, label attaching, and finally packaging. Most of these steps are done by dedicated machines.

After finishing the visit we had to meet the HR manager and the general manager. They were very friendly and discuss our project. We never expected such a meeting.

Since this reached the highest position in the company we have to do a better project now. On the way, we planned how to initiate the project and propose them an impressive one.
