THE STORY

Sira, a ten-year-old boy who lives in a street family with his mother father, and physically disabled sister. Their living is singing and dancing on the street. Father is a heart patient, but he ignores having treatments because he has no ability to do both feeding the family and having treatments. They live under the Nuga tree in a very little hut.

Sira, the little boy

Sira is chasing after a bicycle dream and his younger sister chasing after a dream of a new doll. His mother gives a rupee or more daily, to him from their daily earnings to make money for a bicycle. After realizing that he would never reach the target by just only dancing and singing on the street he starts to find money by himself. As he is a very little and uneducated poor boy, he falls into trouble more than earning money. They face a lot of troubles due to the consequences of child labor and not going to school.

One day he receives a large amount of money from a foreigner. He is really happy and that amount is enough for buying his dream. First, he bought a new doll for his younger sister and comes happily. By the time his father has been admitted to the hospital. The condition is serious and Sira forgets his bicycle dream and generously spends all his money on his father. But he couldn't save his father. Doctors couldn't save him.

Then he holds his mother's hand tightly to feed the family. He takes his father's job. A ten-year-old little boy becomes the strength of the family.

The Morale of the movie

As a little kid when I was watching the film at the movie theatre, the darkness hides my tears from the people. At that time, I had no idea what it really was. But today, I feel what it is. It runs in various themes.

  • Pure hearts of the children

Sira got chances to steal dolls from the kids he meets. Though he knows about his sister's dream of having a new doll he never destroyed any other kid's happiness to make his sister happy.

  • Poverty is not barrier for love

When the time sira got enough money to buy his bicycle first he bought a new doll for his sister. He loves his sister with all his heart.

And the parental love for the kids is both really heart touching and heartbroken. Though the father of this family suffering from a serious heart disease he refused to take treatments, and simply say, "We can starve. But how about the children?".

When sira was caught up by the Police, for transporting drugs unknowingly, the mother fought and shouted to the lawyer and judge not to bully her child and make him frightened. Though she is an uneducated lady who has no social state she forgets all and fought for her kid.

from the movie

  • What a tradegy poverty is.

Sira and the family have no enough food. Father had to give up his life due to poverty. Kids have no chance to have an education. Sira is often misused in the pursuit of money for his bicycle dream. Once he was used to transporting drugs for money. There he was arrested by the police. The rich people of the city exploit his labor. Once he was going to be physically abused. People are harassing him.

There is a symbolic story on the way to take his father to the cemetery. Here is that symbolic story.

The difference between a funeral chariot of a rich man and their poor father's funeral chariot. There are so many people who are going after that big black chariot. But their poor father has just only three. Just the three members of his family. It simply say the huge difference between poverty and rich. Elsewhere I saw the same story with a different symbol. Shop keepers are very fond of rich children and strongly condemn poor children like Sira.

The beautiful song that captured the heart.

There is only one song throughout this movie. That one song is the joy of the film.

Harshana Dissanyaka is the singer, Somarathna Dissanyaka who wrote it, and Rohana Weerasinghe who made the melody. Thank you so much for the song "Meka sonduru lokayak". Heart touching and amazing!!!

"This is a pleasant world
Like a party full of joys
Ladies and gents
Let's have fun
Say no tears...
That blurs the beauty of the world...
Say no sighs..
Your dream hopes may escape..."

Find a reason to smile despite a thousand of questions.

So here is the key for Samanala Thatu..

Go if you like.😍

Sorry, for low quality images, because most of them are taken from the movie itself and for mistakes, I'm just a kid in movie reviews.

Thank you!
Best regards!

I remember I went to watch this movie with my family members😄
It is a quite emotional one though.

Yeah! Somarathna Dissanayaka did quite impressive work those days

I'm just a kid in movie reviews.

Who says!

"Meka sonduru lokayak".

When I was asked what was my favourite song, it was always this! 😍

I remember I watched this in theatre with my parents years ago. So beautiful movie.♥️

This is a great article dude. Good job.👏

Thanks, bro. Yeah, those days 'Meka sonduru Lokayak' and 'Iren Handen' songs were always the favorite.

I am very happy about your writing style. I also have watched this and now I thing these children are adults like us. It was a sensitive movie.. But when I first watch it as a kid, I didn't get an idea about every scene in the movie. But now, when I watch it for the second time, I know the real meaning of everything.

Good luck with your writing
