What on earth has gone wrong with Liverpool?

Liverpool are on a kind of slump that nobody at the beginning of the season could have possibly predicted. The team that won the English Premier League by an incredible 18 points last year now has lost three games in a row, two for them at Anfield, have lost to Brighton, and Burnley who were the ones to snap a 68 game unbeaten streak at home. It is an incredible turnaround and problem for Jurgen Klopp, and one he has to solve fast, as Liverpool slip alarmingly down the league table. They now sit 4th in the league, but a huge 11 points off Man City in top spot, and City have a game in hand too, this evening against a Spurs team that are horribly out of form too.

So what has gone wrong? Injuries, yes, but also attitude too. Has the hunger finally gone now the team have achiever the holy grail of winning the Premier League? The writing was on the wall early in the season BEFORE Virgil Van Dyk got injured in the 7-2 mauling at the hands of Aston Villa. That day Van Dyk played, and still Liverpool were completely outplayed.

I do think that because of the relentless nature of the season under Covid-19, if things start to disintegrate, there is little to no time to rest and recuperate, and to allow those players out of form to regain confidence; Alisson in particular is suffering, and making inexplicable mistakes at the moment. You know, in order to fix things on the training ground, there is one other thing that may be hampering pretty much all of the teams. Fitness and energy levels. Liverpool play a high press game, and to sustain that over two seasons back to back virtually without a break I consider almost impossible.

I think the season is gone, and Man City are going to run away with the title now. As for Liverpool's best chance to save their season? It has to be a tilt at the European Cup, and it returns this week too, but to do well in that competition, they are going to have to change philosophy, raise their game a lot, and recover some confidence very quickly indeed...
