This soccer team has been my favourite since the year 2006. Then it was in basking in one of the periods of it's glory days.

Team History

---

Manchester United Football Club started out as 'Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club' otherwise called 'Newton Heath LYR F.C'. It was formed in the year 1878, about 142 years ago from today. The team's first recorded match was on November 20 1880, a 6-0 loss to Bolton Wanderers reserve team. The team joined the English First division in 1892-1893 season by which time they had drop 'LYR' from their name. They were relegated to the second division after just 2 seasons.

After accumulating a debt of £2,670 (equivalent to £290,000 / 2,190,301.76 STEEM in 2020) in 1902, the team captain was able to source out four (4) business men who wanted to invest in the club £500 in the team. The name was changed and on 24 April, 1902, Manchester United Football Club was born. Four years later, the team gained promotion back to the First Division and 2 years later (in 1908), they won their first league title.

In 1957, the team became the first English team to compete in the European cup under Sir Matt Busby. They lost out to Real Madrid in the semi finals although they recorded their biggest ever victory yet, a 10-0 whooping of Anderlecht.

The following season, the team was involved in an air crash in Munich (popularly referred to as the Munich Air Disaster). About 8 players died and the coach was badly injured. This happen on their way back from a quarter-final victory against Red Star Belgrade while the plane was attempting to take off after refueling at Munich, Germany.

In 1968, the team became the first English team to win the European cup, beating Benfica 4-1 in the final.

The longest serving captain of the team is Bryan Robson, he served for 12 years.

In 1999, the team became the won her first treble including the premier league, champions league and the FA cup.
