FOOTBALL DAILY: THE RED DEVILS BOW OUT OF THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!

in World Of Football ⚽2 years ago (edited)

The English Giants bowed out of the Champions League yesterday after they were unable to reply to Atletico Madrid's only goal, on their home grounds, Old Trafford. The goal came when Renan Lodi knocked in the ball from a cross by Antoine Griezmann in the 41st minute of the game. The first leg was played 3 weeks ago at Atletico's Home in the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, with the result being a goal-a-piece(1:1).

Despite not being in their best form, It was never a doubt that Manchester United were the favourites to win and qualify for the next round of the competition. Atletico Madrid on the other hand had not lost a game in five(5) matches and was on a 3-game winning streak, now making it a 4-game winning streak.

Manchester United played a very good game but their efforts were just not enough. Though they didn't take advantage of their goalscoring opportunities, they were quite sound defensively except for the one opportunity that Atletico Madrid took advantage of. In attack, The Red Devils mounted all the pressure could on the Atletico Madrid defence but to no avail.

On the other hand, Atletico Madrid was just superb; defensively, they were almost impenetrable, not giving Manchester United an easy through. Jan Oblak played a major role in the defence by saving several of the Red Devils' goalscoring opportunities. Offensively, Atletico was not so daring in the second half even though they didn't take their chances lightly in the first half, which in turn gave them the only goal of the game.

Today, the last games of the Round-of-16 would take place between Juventus and Villareal and Lille and Chelsea. Chelsea is in good form and is already standing on 2 goals from the first leg played at their home. Juventus is also in form, having a 4-game winning streak and a 12-game unbeaten run but their first with Villareal ended in a 1:1 draw.

Which two are going to qualify?

Chelsea or Lille and Juventus or Villareal?

Shear and utter disappointment for the Red Devils. They were simply outplayed by Atletico which is no surprise as they have quite a reputation in the champions league.

It’s going to get quite interesting with Liverpool and Villarreal also going through.

Very very disappointing performances by both the Red Devils and the Old Ladies of Turin. Hopefully, the qualified teams can put on a great show for us.

Saludos!

Indeed Jan Oblak was exceptional, my man of the match. All we can do now is to wait. Hoping for better performances. Cheers!
