Snakes are one of the rare animal species which happens to be the most fascinating yet the most ignored. They belong to the suborder Serpentes, the body of which extends lengthwise. They have more than 3000 species all over the earth and snakes can be found in various environments ranging from tropical rainforests to desert sand.
These amazing creatures are very important in their ecosystems as both hunters and hunted. They act as natural controllers of rodent and insect populations in the ecosystem. Numerous species also show interesting biological mechanisms such as fangs to kill and passive disguises.
They help maintain the ecological systems but unfortunately snakes are one species that through history have faced a lot of negative publicity and therefore ignorance fear. Learning about their behavior and the areas they inhabit is important in fostering peaceful coexistence. The majority of snakes including the ones in typically populated places like Asia are not poisonous and hence do not pose much danger to the people.
Conservation efforts are important because a lot of snakes are endangered due to destruction of their habitats and global warming.
