Hello everyone,
It's your favorite Steemian @rakiya from Nigeria and I'm delighted to join in the contest organized by @ridwant, here in this noble community which is titled "Unique Traditions of Indigenous Peoples in my Country".

Every country has a unique tradition that distinguishes it from others and my country Nigeria is not an exception for that reason, I will be sharing one of the most unique traditions of my dear country with you all.

Nigeria is a very big country and for that reason, we have different tribes and people in it. The country is grouped into Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba. So I will discuss based on my tradition which is the Hausa tradition and Jukun tribe to be precise.

Tell an interesting story about a unique tradition of indigenous peoples in your country/region.

One of the ancient traditions of my people is that when a king dies, he will be placed on a horse to journey to the lands of the spirits and also 7 virgin heads will accompany him to the land of the spirits and the chief guide will also go with him to continue serving him in the afterlife.

Kings here don't die easily so this tradition as we all know are story to most of us because as children growing up we have never experienced it. The year 2021, was the first time I came across such an incident because a king after ruling for 80 years died and the long-lasting culture played out as though we are still in the ancient.

Immediately after the king died, we came to know that there were virgins always at the palace ready for the sacrifice to journey with the king to the afterlife. They were so happy to give up their lives for their king. We were told that they followed the guard who carried the king on his back to the afterlife.

There is a forest in my area where it is believed to be the home of the spirits. Mortal men don't go into the forest and come back alive from the story we heard hence only when the king dies that his guard and the virgin go in and they will never return because they will have to continue serving the king.

As it was explained in history to us while in school, we saw it happened in 2021 when the king who had ruled for more than 80 years joined his ancestors. People from far and near all came to witness that wonderful event and history was rewritten because many of us thought it was just a story in the beginning.

Why is this tradition unique?

In a modern world like this, nobody will believe that someone will follow a dead body into the afterlife for any reason. Also, the customs and traditions were played out as of the ancient, nothing has changed at all.

With that, I strongly believe that the tradition is still unique because technology or religion has not impacted or made any difference to the history we were taught about years ago. So you see how unique this tradition is.

Also, I don't think there is still a place in the world that respects its culture and tradition like the way it is respected in my place seeing such an act in 2021. These are a few of the reasons why I think the tradition is still very unique it has not been abolished for any reason yet.

I want to invite @simonnwigwe @josepha and @ruthjoe to join the contest
