Introduction

Greetings to all, am thankful to @ridwant for organising this contest. Being part of this contest is a great opportunity for me and all steemians participating to make our unique traditions known to others steemians.
The unique tradition of the region am going to be sharing with you all is the Emume Iri Ji Ohuru or Iwa Ji tradition, so relax and let the story begin.

The History of the Emume Iri Ji Ohuru Tradition

This tradition is an ancient tradition originated from the belief that Ahiajoku (the God of Agriculture) gave yams to the Igbo people as a gift. As time went on it became a traditional festival to mark a new planting season and a way to connect with the ancestors and seek for their protection and guidance. This tradition has become part of the Igbo people and they're known for it.

The Tradition

The Emume Iri Ji Ohuru, Ife ji Oku, Iwa Ji or Ike ji (depending on the dialect the community is speaking) is the tradition of the prestigious Igbo people making up of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo State, all from the Southeastern part of Nigeria.
The Emume Iri Ji Ohuru or otherwise known as the New Yam Festival is a Traditional festival perform yearly to thank the gods of the land for the bountiful harvest, for protection and also to bless the next planting season.

The Uniqueness of the Tradition

During the celebration of this festival, this are the things that takes place:

  1. Prayers are made inform of traditional rituals to the gods of the land, so that the gods will continue to give them a bountiful harvest in years to come.
  2. After the rituals for the blessing of the Yam, the yam is cooked the and the Chief is the first person to eat the Yam before any other person.
  3. A traditional play like the masquerade and other plays will be displayed on this traditional festival to grace the occasion.

Consequences for not performing this Traditional festival

This tradition is a long time tradition pass on from generations to generations, so if the traditional festival is not celebrated, it is said that there won't be a bountiful harvest in that planting season.
Apart from that, no one in the community will eat yam, if caught, the persons will be punished and if all the people in the household ate, the punishment will be saved to all the members of the household who ate the yam. But if no one sees the person or persons who ate the yam when the festival was not done, the person or persons will be punished by the gods of the land.

I will love to invite @roohbee, @akanjohn and @klassic1 to take part in this contest.
