Hello, my good Steemit friends! I am happy to have you here reading through my post, in which I talked about the Unique Traditions of Indigenous Peoples in My Country (Region), which is organized by @ridwant.

In Nigeria, we have so many traditions, but the most common and well-known is the new yam festival, which is a tradition where people celebrate the harvest of a new yam, just like in my own village, Bekwarra, which is normally celebrated on the 1st Saturday of September.

There are a lot of things about the new yam festival in my region that make people like celebrating the festival, which has become a very big traditional festival in my region. During the preparation of the new yam festival, farmers would start donating new yams ahead of the celebration, and people would be preparing their traditional attire that they would wear during the new yam day.

A lot of activities do take place before and after the celebration, and before the celebration, people engage themselves in dancing competitions, football competitions, wrestling wrestling and so on, where the final stage is usually the day of the yam celebration.

During the main day of the celebration, dancing, breaking of kolanut and yam, and other things of the usual kind take place. On the day when wine is given to people, they usually pour a small quantity on the ground as a sign of appealing to their ancestors.

Why is this tradition unique?

The tradition is unique because it is celebrated once a year and is well known by Nigerians, so people from far away usually come back home to celebrate. It is also important as it is a festival that makes people start eating new yams.

Eating new yam usually comes after the new yam festival, which is regarded as the biggest traditional festival in my region. It unites people together and teaches us about culture and traditions that have existed for years.

@yakspeace, @dave-hanny, and @kuzyboy, you are all invited.

Wow, what an interesting sweet potato tradition in your country!

I'm sure sweet potatoes contain a lot of philosophical value for the people there.
