A country or state is governed/ruled by a body of people called the government. Right from ancient times, countries and regions were governed by kings. In the late 18th century, the first president in the world and the United States, George Washington resumed office from 1789 - 1797. Ever since then, the election of head of states in other regions into power began.

In my country, Nigeria, the first president ceremonial president who served after independence and in the first republic was Nnamdi Azikiwe, while the first president elected into power was Shehu Shagari. In my article today, I'll be discussing on the questions laid out on the contest theme "Why Must There Be a President" published by @ridwant in Steem Indonesia Community.

What does the election of the head of state (Election) mean you?

An election is a formal process for selecting a person or group of persons fro a public office. It also means agreement or disagreement to a political proposition by voting. In election, it is either you vote or being voted for. Every country is entitled to conduct elections after a few years(exception of monarchy government).

When a public leader (head of state) have been selected through election, what it means is that:-
Democracy and The will of the people has been expressed. As part of a democratic process, When an election takes place, the masses votes for the candidate who they think is the right choice for the office. If not, It is naturally difficult for the right representative to be chosen ordinarily. Despite the problems of democracy/election such as vote buying, thuggery, election rigging and the rest of them, the process is still a necessity.

Why does a president have to exist?

The answer to this 👆 question is simple. The government is made of 3 arms namely
Executive
Legislature and
Judiciary arm of government.

The president belongs to the executive arm, executing the policies of legislature and adding a counterbalance to it. It will be impossible for a nation to be without a single spokesperson, policy maker as well as well the head of state. Each arm is necessary to balance power. The head of state is therefore necessary even if most of the job is related and based on ceremony.

What are the criteria for a Head of State/President that you like?

Some of the criteria that I think a Head of State/ President should possess are:
✓ Character and integrity
✓ Effective communicative skills
✓ Good Educational history, background or foundation
✓ Disaster and crisis management skills
✓ Strong vision for the development of the state/country.

Conclusion

A nation indeed cannot be without a representative, leader, spokesperson and implementor, enforcer of the policies made by the congress and the legislature. In times of national confrontation, he is a mediator and a instrument in nation building and co-operation with government programmes and scheme.
