Warmer Weather and the Yard is Alive with Birds...

in Amazing Nature4 years ago (edited)

The temperatures are finally getting above freezing and there is warmth in the sun!

It's amazing the difference in the activity of the birds (and myself) the warmer weather can make! Our yard is alive with the call of the birds with dozens of birds flitting about!

What really boosted the number of birds in the yard was the rolling feeding flocks of redpolls!

I love to hear their contented chirps and watch their exuberant activity and just the sheer numbers of them!

Redpolls Chirping and Busy Gathering Seeds

We never see the redpolls until later winter and they always come in large flocks. I checked to see what their migrating patterns were and found out they only move further south when there is a temporary scarcity of food further North. I'm making sure the feeders are kept full plus there is a lot of seeds coming from the spruce, maples and the other seed heads of perennials I leave standing for winter feed for the birds.

I love the little red caps they have and the lovely patches of red the males sport on their chests.

The adult female are not as colorful as the males, also the immature male redpolls lack the extra coloring as you can see in the picture below with a female (or immature male) and male together (they are well camouflaged in the sunflower seed shells!)

They are cute little birds and I found out they are a type of finch that are really well suited to the colder temperatures. We will get a yellow colored finch in the summer and these redpolls later winter.

These redpolls are a well welcomed arrival adding cheeriness after a bleak winter.

Check them out and see how they scatter when the woodpecker comes to the feeder...

This video below you will hear the bluejays and a female evening grosbeak plus see her at the feeder along with the redpolls

The grosbeaks were plentiful too, waiting patiently in the trees for their turn at the feeder. They also liked to feed on the maple tree seeds.

The Blue Jays were the more dominate birds and the others left the feeder when the blue jays came. You could hear their calls echoing through the forest.

I'll leave you with a couple more photos of those cute little redpolls. I hope you enjoyed seeing and listening to them as much as I did!

What awesome little birdies! I love 'em!

That closeup of the male redpoll was stunning! But there were several others I liked also.

It's been so like March here in New England since early February, we started hearing the dawn chorus a few weeks back.
