Democracy or dictatorship: Which is better for stability and progress?

Democracy is a system of governance where people assume leadership through a vote of simple majority. In this system of governance, the citizens have the freedom to express their grievances and also suggest a way out of any form of challenge (freedom of speech). Back then in school, we define democracy as the government of the people, by the people and for the people. This means that the voice of citizens is key in decision-making.

This system of governance is characterised by:

1. Freedom of speech: Citizens have the right to give positive criticism and also suggest a way forward.
2. No one is above the law including the president of the nation.
3. Right to be voted for and vote for.
4. Citizens participation: Citizens have the right to participate in clubs, associations, organisations or any form of activities.

WHILE
Dictatorship is a style of leadership where an individual gets into power through forceful means. In this style of leadership, the interest of the leader or small group of people who form his cabinet is what is considered in carrying out the affairs of the nation. Citizens are forced to do things against their wishes or interests.

Characteristics of dictatorship:

1. The use of force or intimidation in their leadership.
2. They lie through the media to gain public support.

Considering the meaning and characteristics of this style of leadership, I think that democracy is better for stability and progress since:

• Citizens' vote based on credit.
• Interests of the citizens are considered.
• when things are wrong citizens can complain through social media, peaceful protest and other means.
• Leadership works with the constitution of the nation.

How does democracy help a country move forward compared to a dictatorship?

Democracy helps a country move forward compared to dictatorship because:

1. Citizens are considered in decision-making. This allows them to give maximum support to the leadership since it is what they want.
2. The leadership promotes equality before the law which allows members to give their best since they have equal rights.
3. Challenging issues are addressed through peaceful dialogue.

Can a dictatorship handle tough times better than a democracy?

Dictators handle issues through forceful means. He or they can send troops of army to areas of unrest and force citizens into their homes, denying them the right to explain their grievances. Here, they may be calm but injured in their minds and dying in silence.
Democratic leaders called the two parties to settle the issues amicably even if a little force was applied to calm the situation. Here, the two parties come to an agreement thereby allowing them to live harmoniously.
Hence, dictators can not handle tough times better than democratic leaders.

Why is personal freedom important for a country to grow under different types of governments?

Personal freedom is the right to live anywhere you want, to eat anything you want, to lay your complaints and also give your opinion on issues, do the type of work you want and so on. If such is not available, a country can never grow as expected. It will be a form of slavery in the 21st century.
