The 80-90s were the heyday of Indonesian rock music, many great rock singers were born in this generation, even Indonesian lady rockers such as Nicky Astria and Inka Christy were graduates of this generation. I was born and spent my childhood in the 90s very familiar with their works, because my late father often played this generation's music, especially songs from the Rock Band God Bless on his favorite tapes.
AHMAD ALBAR
God Bless vocalist Ahmad Albar has such a charismatic voice that I fell in love with his voice, even though I am young and far from his age. His full name is Ahmad Syech Albar, but in the Indonesian music world he is known as Ahmad "iyek" Albar. Born in Surabaya on July 16, 1946 to Syech Albar and Farida Al-Hasni. Ahmad Albar's musical journey began when he was a child, together with some of his friends he formed the Bintang Remaja music group which only lasted for 2 years.source
In 1960 Ahmad Albar moved to the "Tulip Country" Netherlands to study, there he again formed the Band Take Five (1966-1967), which had attended the festival and won the best vocalist award. In 1967-1972, Ahmad Albar joined Clover Leaf he released 9 singles. Some of his songs include, "Don't Spoil My Day" and "Grey Clouds".source
In 1972 Ahmad Albar returned to Indonesia with guitarist Clover Leaf (Ludwig Lemans) who also visited Indonesia to observe the musical life of the people of Jakarta. Ahmad Albar invited several musicians to practice with him, so in early 1973 they agreed to form a band called God Bless with the first formation being Ahmad Albar (Vocals) Fuad Hassan (Drums) and Donny Fattah (Bass) Ludwig Lemans (Guitar) and Deddy Dores (Keyboards). God Bless's keyboard had changed from Deddy Dores who chose to focus on his own band to Jockie Surjoprajogo who also didn't last long at God Bless. Finally, Sorman Lubis became God Bless's permanent keyboardist.
1974 was a year of mourning for Ahmad Albar and his friends, because two God Bless personnel, namely Fuad Hasan and Sorman Lubis, died in a car accident, Ludwig Lemans the guitarist also decided to return to the Netherlands and leave God Bless. Finally Ahmad Albar invited Jockie to return to God Bless, Jockie invited Ian Antono (guitarist) and Teddy Sujaya (drummer), with this new formation Ahmad Albar and his band finally released their first album entitled "God Bless" in 1975. Talking about Ahmad Albar, it's not complete if you don't tell a little about God Bless, after the first album God Bless often changed personnel but the band still exists until now and has never disbanded. When Deep Purple performed a concert in Jakarta, God Bless was chosen as the opening band for the concert.

Ahmad Albar also briefly released several Duo Albums with Ucok Harahap after forming the Duo Kribo group, the vocalist of AKA Band, the name of the group was inspired by their frizzy haircut. This duet released three albums, namely Neraka Jahanam (1977), Pelacur Tua (1978), dan Panggung Sandiwara (1978).
In 1991 Ahmad Albar had joined Gong 2000 which was formed by Ian Antono. Its members are Albert Wijaya, Yaya Muktio, Harry Anggoman, and Donny Fatah. Besides that, musicians from other genres such as jazz are joined here, such as Mates, Indra Lesmana, Gilang Ramadhan, and even Yuke Semeru from Bandung is also joined. Gong 2000 also collaborated with solo singers such as Nicky Astria, Ikang Fawzi, Iwan Fals, Gito Rollies and Hari Moekti. The group produced four albums: Bara Timur (1991), Gong Live (1992), Laskar (1993), and Prahara (2000).
Of the many songs that have been sung by Ahmad Albar, there are two songs that I really like, namely Semut Hitam (Black Ants) and Rumah Kita (Our Home). Semut Hitam tells the story of how a group of ants unite in achieving their goals, humans should learn from ants how to live together with mutual cooperation instead of being ignorant and behaving worse than animals. Then the song Rumah Kita which tells about the trend of urbanization at that time, as if if you want to be rich and develop you have to go to the city even though everything is available in the countryside, it's just a matter of wanting it or not.
At the age of 70, Ahmad Albar is still very energetic and still working. The spirit he shows is the spirit of a true Rocker who will not easily fall when hit by the storms of life. A figure that I really admire and inspire many young people to continue to be consistent with what they like. I pray that you are healthy and happy always Om Ahmad Albar.
