In society and human life, books are a great source of knowledge. I am very fond of books. Because of this, I spend a lot of time in reading books of great authors. I like to read books based on every subject. It can be fiction, nature, science, history, maths, science etc. I have also read novels by great authors like Buchi Emecheta, Nadine Gordimer, Chinua Achebe and Ama Ata Aidoo. All these authors have written great pieces of literature.

My favorite author is Chinua Achebe. He is a Nigerian poet and novelist who is known for his dominant contribution to African literature. He was born on 16 November 1930 in Ogidi, Nigeria and died on 21 March 2013 in Boston. Achebe grew up in Igbo a town in Ogidi. He studied English and Literature at the University of Ibadan.

He wrote his first novel in 1958 with the title Things Fall Apart. This novel is about the colonial government in his homeland and the traditional Igbo life at the time of the advent of missionaries.

Achebe also published a good number collections of short stories and children’s books, including Beware, Soul-Brother (1971), Christmas in Biafra (1973), How the Leopard Got His Claws (1973; with John Iroaganachi), and In Arrow of God.

Chinua has won a lot of awards. Some of these are the Man Booker International Prize(2007), Peace Prize of the German Book Trade(2002), The Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize(2010) and St. Louis Literary Award(1999).

I like Chinua Achebe because he stood for his people and his tradition. He fought against racism in the sense that people being treated fairly no matter the race, colour and religion was his main priority. He made me appreciate literature from his good books. Moreover, he is a great writer. I love him for his great qualities.
