Ref: Diver's Abode

Facing a Flooded Mask? Don't Panic!

Diving with a flooded mask can be unnerving, but keeping calm is the key. Learn how to navigate this common issue with simple steps and expert tips.

Dive Mask Clearing Protocol: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Stop and Regroup Mentally

When water unexpectedly fills your mask, don't let panic take over. Pause for a moment, take a few deep breaths, and remind yourself that you have plenty of air in your tank and a dive buddy right beside you. It's a simple mental reset to help you stay calm and focused.

2. Tilt-Head Back Slightly

Position your head at a 30-degree angle to allow the water to flow to the bottom of the mask, preparing it for clearing.

3. Take A Deep Breath To Fill Your Lungs

Inhale deeply through your regulator to create pressure inside the mask for efficient clearing.

4. Hold the Top of The Mask Seal

Press the top of the mask against your forehead to create an airtight seal, preventing water from rushing into your eyes and nose.

5. Break the Bottom Seal and Look Down

Gently lift the bottom of the mask to create an opening, then tilt your head forward to let gravity drain the water out.

6. Blow The Air You Inhaled In Step 3 Through Your Nose

Exhale slowly through your nose to push the water out of the mask, maintaining a gentle and steady stream for 5-10 seconds.

7. Voila! Crystal Clear View Restored

Finish by inhaling to repressurize the mask, look side to side to clear remaining droplets, and gently exhale to ensure a completely clear view.
