Ghana 🇬🇭!! Ghana my motherland is a peace-loving country and one of the leading countries to attain independence from colonial rule in Sub-Sahara Africa. We are made up of diverse people from different ethnic groups in 16 regions who speak different languages. Language is a barrier here as to trying to understand each other but one thing, if not many, which makes us understand each other is our delicious FOOD! Our Ghanaian dishes have been one loved by all and sundry. No matter the part of Ghana you go you will find similar delicious delicacies being cooked, served and eaten.
In Ghana, there are so many delicious traditional foods but I will be focusing on 4 common foods from 4 ethnic groups which are loved by all with a touch of health benefits.

Fufu: Fufu is a popular meal made by the Akan ethnic group. It is A dough made of cassava and green plantains mixed together. The side dish is traditionally consumed with soups such as groundnut soup, palm nut soup, green leafy soup, and light soup. This is one healthy dish prescribed by doctors for people who have low level of potassium. It is very rich in potassium, full of energy and very low in cholesterol.

The second is Tuo Zaafi and Ayoyo soup: Tuo Zaafi also known as TZ or ‘Diehuo’ in some languages in Ghana, originated from the Northern part of Ghana. It is an Hausa language where ‘Tuo’ means stirring and ‘Zaafi’ means hot. Interestingly, this delicious delicacy is not only found in Ghana but in some parts of West Africa such as Nigeria. It is a millet-sorghum type of dish which is usually accompanied with Ayoyo soup filled with fish and meat. This colorful dish loved by all come be taken in the evening. You must wonder why taken in the evening right? Do not be worried about having a bloated stomach. It is very nutritious and easy to digest. It’s very low in cholesterol, slowing down aging, and acts as an antioxidant to keep the skin hydrated and to reduce wrinkles.

Then there is Kenkey. Kenkey, also known as “Kormi” or “Dokono” originates from the Ga-Dangme ethnic group. It is made of fermented white corn, which is widely consumed throughout the country. This delicious meal can eaten with any stew, soup or hot sauce. Interestingly, it is one meal usually eaten in the mornings by workers who work long hours just so they can have enough energy to carry out their daily activities. It is packed with a lot of energy and rich in vitamins. It is high in fibre and low on fat.

Last but not least, Banku and Okro Stew or Soup. This is one delicious meal you can never go wrong with. It originates from the Ewe ethnic group. It is loved by all ethnic groups in the country. This Ghanaian dish is cooked by a mixture of fermented corn and cassava dough in hot water into a smooth whitish ball. Though it is usually served with Okro stew or soup, others prefer it with hot sauce and tilapia or smoked fish.
