🌾RICE OR FISH 🐠
The proverb 'Bengali in fish and rice' is very applicable to Netrokona region. There is no shortage of fish in our rural Bengal. Lots of fish can be found in ponds, rivers, reservoirs, ponds and even in paddy fields during the rainy season. Most of these fish are small fish. Such as- Putti, Boicha, Khailsa, Batai, Guinga (Tengra), Isha (Shrimp), Uhal / Ladi (Taki), Gutum, Chanda, Kanpana, Veduri (Meni), Chikra, Kaikya, Darkina, Bamboo Leaf, Mala, Cuttackita ( Bele / Bailya), Chautta, Kai, Shing, Magur etc. These fish are rich in nutrients and delicious to eat. In our Bengali life, it is unthinkable to eat without fish at one time. Whether the fish is fresh or dried.
There is a lot of rain all over the country this year. Our Netrokona was not left out of that rain. After a few days of heavy rain, fishing starts as soon as the sun rises. Then the frozen water due to the sun starts to decrease. People of any age, starting from the elderly, go down in groups to go fishing. Our small members cannot be excluded from fishing efforts. Basically they are the current time fish hunters. At this time no farmer has to buy fish from the market. Many people become fancy fishermen for the adequacy of fish.
Fish obtained from various sources are not farmed fish. This fish grows naturally. In many cases, when some fish overflow the banks of the pond due to heavy rains and go to the ground with the water, those fish are caught. After the sun rises, the water accumulated in different lands or ponds is irrigated and fish is caught by hand from the mud. Fishing is also done with the help of various fishing equipments such as outside, kunch etc. Two field isles (elevated with soil) are kept to get out. Fishing is usually done at night with the help of kunch. It is called 'Alo Mara'. Because fish cannot be seen in the dark of night. So with the light of a torch, the movement of the fish is noticed by walking on the side of the land or dobar. Later, the fish was stopped by throwing a torch light on the fish and hitting it with a fist. In this way small fish as well as big fish can be caught many times.
Fishing goes on almost every day. There is no prohibition on fishing in any place, be it one's own land, other people's land or natural water body. Where there is an opportunity or there are more fish, there is a fishing competition. Who can catch more fish. After bringing this fish home, the female members sit down to beat it. Many people sit together and fish. Again taking turns helping each other. The amount of fish is so high that it is impossible to finish eating so many fish. Moreover, not everyone has modern equipment to preserve fish in pills. Then the peasants of the house used their local practice to let the fish dry in the sun. The fish is dried by pulling a rope between the house rice, vegetable scaffolding, tree branches or two bamboos. The fish is dried in separate containers according to the type of fish. For this bamboo sieve and kula are used.
The fish are stored in the sun for a few days. These dried fish are called ‘hundi’ in the regional language of Netrokona. The boat is a fish stored locally. This is not the way fishermen usually dry or preserve fish. Here you just have to cut the fish and keep it in the sun. Basically, they save the fish for a few purposes. First of all this fish is very tasty to eat. Moreover, at a time when fish is not available naturally or the price of fish is very high, the shortage of fish can be filled with this boat. These dried fish can be stored for many days. Sometimes you can eat it next year if you put a little sun in it.
Many times this fish is also sold in the market. The demand and price of this fish is much higher than the Hidal or Champa dried fish available for purchase. The women of the village distribute hundi among their relatives after eating themselves. It is a very popular food for everyone, big or small. This fish is cooked with a variety of vegetables in winter. It is true that fish are available in abundance during the rainy season. However, small fish are better for drying. It also dries quickly and is good for storing again.
It is scientifically proven that the amount of meat is the highest among dried fish. Without fish, our food would be incomplete. We get meat from a variety of foods derived from animals and plants. Which compensates, builds and enhances our body. There is no pair of dried fish as animal meat.
