Different cultures have different traditions and one of it can be how a loved one is buried.  In some Indian cultures a mausoleum is built - this is a building with different chambers for the deceased.  It can be big or small and it is mostly built for rich or influential people.

One of the most well known mausoleums is the Taj Mahal in India.  This is a heritage site and millions of tourists come to visit it every year.

It is located in Agra in northern India and the name means 'crown of palaces'.

 It was built as the final resting place for Mumtaz Mahal, the third wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.

  • the height is 171 meters and the top dome which is sometimes called the 'onion dome' is 35 meters high
  • this structure is considered one of India's most loved treasures and attracts millions of tourists
  • the Taj Mahal is not the only building on that land, you will also find pools and other mausoleums and a large garden here
