Aston Villa have ended their 12-year wait for a win over Manchester United after a goal form Kortney Hause in the dying moments of the encounter gifted Sean Dyche's men a 1-0 victory, with Bruno Fernandes also missing a penalty in additional time.

Manchester had beaten Aston Villa 37 times, the highest number of victories any team has had against an opponent in the league.

It was the visitors that got the first sight of goal in the 16th minute when John McGinn opened United's defence with a splitting pass behind Luke Shaw that allowed Matty Cash find Matt Targett in the box, who could only manage his effort off target.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was forced into an early substitution just after the half hour mark, when Shaw was taken off as he couldn't continue following an earlier injury and was replaced by Diogo Dalot just moments after being cautioned by referee Mike Dean.

It was the visitors who were taking the game to their hosts and nearly got dividends for their efforts in the 40th minute. A corner by Douglas Luiz was met at the far post by Ezri Konsa, whose powering header narrowly missed goal.

United were struggling to find their rhythm and Cristiano Ronaldo looked an isolated figure as the midfield couldn't find him with balls behind Konsa and Tyron Mings.

Pogba tried his luck just after the hour mark from the edge of the Villa box, but his curling effort towards the top corner was a bit wayward without accuracy.

Solskjaer was forced to make the second substitution of the game in the 67th minute when, just like Shaw, Harry Maguire went to the ground and without willing to take the risk was replaced by Viktor Lindelof.

Ollie Watkins almost gifted Villa the opener, when in the 69th minute, he cut in from the left side unto his right foot, wading off challenge from Raphael Varane and Scott McTominay before releasing a powerful shot that was well parried by David Gea.

While Villa may have thought having a share of the spoils was not a bad result afterall, the hosts were in dire need of win to keep up the race at the summit of the league. In twisted fortunes, it was Villa who struck in the 88th minute. A corner kick by Douglas Luiz was met at the near post by Hause with a flashing header past De Gea to give the visitors a glimmer of hope for three points.

The game room a dramatic turn a few seconds later as Hause almost turned villain from hero as he conceded a penalty with an outstretched arm in the box. There were scuffles in the build to the kick as Emiliano Martinez was seen, obviously gesturing to Cristiano Ronaldo to take the penalty from Bruno Fernandes, who was set to take it. Fernandes eventually took it, but hit his kick high and into the stands, to the relief of Hause and the Villa faithful as the visitors secured a famous victory.

Conluding Thoughts

Despite their impressive start to the season, Manchester United have again, been caught in the web of inconsistent performances, from their loss to Young Boys in the Champions League and recently being knocked out by West Ham in the League Cup.

The spotlight is on Ole once more, as many still believe he is not the right man for the United job, despite considerable progress with the team since his arrival. The absence of a trophy has not helped the situation.

Villa would be happy with the three Points, making it two wins in two premier league games, following their 3-0 victory over Everton the last time out and they would take a consolation in this following their exit in the league cup in the hands of Chelsea on penalty shootout.
