My journey so far in university of Nigeria Enugu Campus(UNEC) by@wilosmith

I'm in one of the greatest schools in Nigeria, one that is known in Nigeria and has produced great alumnis. Who would have told me that the school is living in past glory? I mean, the school is the best thing after jollof rice online but in reality, it's a horror movie. Have you seen the walls of the hostels in the campus? Have you seen the broken chairs in the lecture rooms? Have you even seen the lecture rooms? How about the dilapidated buildings? Currently, UNN is being renovated. New buildings are being built but there's hardly improvement in UNEC. UNEC is a terrible place to be at, I've been there for four years and the improvements are minute. Let me take you through my journey as a UNEC student, particularly a medical student.

I gained admission to UNN, I was excited when I came. I looked forward to a lot of things. UNN is fun, interesting, affordable and calm but there's this eeriness that hits you immediately you step your feet into UNEC. For those who don't understand, I am a student of University of Nigeria, Nsukka but UNN has three main campuses. The main one which is UNN, the second one for mostly medical student which is UNEC. It's located in Enugu town. Then, there's UNTH particularly for Student dentist and doctors. It's the school teaching hospital. All medical and health sciences students spend a year in UNN then the health sciences, i.e, those except the student Doctors and Dentist spend their remaining years in UNEC. The student doctors and dentists finish their study at UNTH after spending two years in UNEC.

Almost everyone wears uniform in UNEC. Those in business/accounting department wear blue and black. Law students wear white and black from first year to final year. For health sciences students, the guys wear white and black while the females wear a nursing gown. We weren't forced to wear uniforms during our time but it was compulsory to wear corporate. Now, even health sciences must wear uniform in pre-clinicals. Medical students particularly wear white and ash for pre-clinicals. The ladies wear a white shirt and black skirt or ash skirt in medical sciences. The only faculty that doesn't wear uniforms are those of environmental studies, ie, architecture, surveying, etc.

I'm studying Medical laboratory science. In consequent posts, you'd know exactly who a medical laboratory scientist is because it's confused most of the times with other courses. In second year, we do mostly pre-clinicals but at that time, it seemed like a bulk of work. I am currently in fourth year and I realised that I was having fun in 2017/2018. We were introduced to our department in second year as we offered only one departmental course in that session. When we entered third year, that was when I started knowing exactly what I'm studying.

In my second year, we heard a lot about physio department. It was one of the best courses we offered then but that was only in class. Whenever they released results, it was always bloody. Pre-clinicals messed up with our heads; my head particularly. I was steadily doubting myself. I was asking questions. Am I not intelligent? Have I gotten dumb? Some of my coursemates still have carry-overs they are trying to write. Luckily for me, I don't have any. My journey through UNEC is one filled with many emotions. A lot of people changed departments, some dropped out but I'm still here and would definitely finish what I started making me a winner amidst it all.
