Hello friends hope you are enjoying your Sunday. I welcome you all once more to my blog. This is an article on postpartum Depression and I hope we all benefit from it.

What is postpartum depression?

This is a mental disorder that is normally experienced by new moms. When a woman gives birth to a newborn, jolts of powerful emotions due to being overly excited, fear and anxiety which can be overwhelming are released. But in the midst of all the excitement, depression would likely to set in.

Causes

During the pregnancy stage, when the mom becomes depressed, it is likely to affect her during her post natal stages too.
The birth of a newborn, normally decreases some important hormones such as estrogen and progesterone and other hormones that are produced in the thyroid glands. This dramatic drop causes a new mom to become tired and have feelings of sluggishness.
Another thing that can cause postpartum depression are emotional disorders. As an new mom, when you barely have enough rest and sleep you start being overwhelmed with feelings of restlessness and slowly start doubting your ability to care for your baby. Feelings of worthlessness and not being able to meet up with the cares of the baby.

Symptoms

Fear that you won't be able to carry out your motherly responsibilities effectively.

Difficulty in sleeping.

Feelings of worthlessness shame and guilt.

Lack of concentration.

Restlessness.

Having thoughts to harm yourself and your baby.

Having anxiety and panic attacks frequently.

When you see all this red flags during your post-natal period, you should dim it necessary to see your doctor.

Categories of people that are at risk of having postpartum depression.

When a new mom has bipolar disorder.

When you have multiple births such as giving birth to twins.

When you have a history of postpartum depression or other post natal disorders in your family.

When you give birth to a baby that has health issues or special needs.

When you lack supportive force in your family that would help you in caring for your baby.

When you have issues with your partner.

When you have financial problems.
Giving birth underage can trigger postpartum depression.

Unwanted pregnancy.

Prevention and cure

If you start experiencing depression during pregnancy, inform your doctor. Visit a therapist that can help you dissolve any feelings of depression.
After your baby is born, also go for medical check-up to make sure that post parturm depression has not set in.And if you have a history of postpartum depression, try to prepare yourself mentally before getting pregnant and visit a therapist frequently.
A father is also at risk of being depressed too once a newborn mom is affect by postpartum depression.

Try to talk to someone like other members of the family when you find most tasks of child care difficult for you, like bathing and feeding the baby . This way they can help you carry out most of this responsibilities thereby relieving you from stress and creating time to have quality time for yourself.

Going through postpartum depression is a very difficult phase in the lives of both mother and child as the child is also affected emotionally as he grows up it can affect the childs social development.
That is why it is unadvisable to leave this medical situation on treated.

Try your possible best to go for sessions with your therapist without missing any. Your doctor may recommend antidepressants for you too when you are going through the process of getting cured of postpartum disorder.
It is important that we create awareness of this disorder as it's a slow killer.
It is the one of the main causes of post-natal suicides that occurs all over the world.
Step up today and get help. It's not something to be ashamed of rather it's something that puts you and other members of your family at risk. And with earlier diagnosis and treatment, you will be able to bond with your baby and experience the joy of motherhood.

Individual also have a part to play. As an individual or member of a family, try to visit a new mom and find out ways you can be of help. You have no idea how the responsibilities of motherhood can be overwhelming. Volunteer to relieve some of their burden too.
Hopefully, by doing all this the rate of postpartum depression if not totally eradicated, will reduce drastically.

Thanks for your time.

Very essential post as depression is a leading killer in the society today. Very little details people miss out on can be the death of a depressed friend. Let's try to be there for one another. Just yesterday I withnessed a case of serious depression in our neighborhood and thankfully she had her friends by her side.

Nice post you have here @starshipsfly. These things are the little details that are being ignored everyday. We do not realize that we should not focus on the baby alone, we should also focus on the mother because we don't know what they might be passing through at that point in time.

very insightful post my dear. Being a medical student myself, i have been taught about this very condition. Prior to my knowledge, i never understood the reason for it until i was enlightened by the fact that it was all about hormonal responses. Thank you for the post

Post-partum depression is like one of the least things women experience after child birth. Our mothers are invaluable; women are wonderful and should be appreciated.
Educative post you've got here
