Great akokites, a name revered all around the city of lagos, a name filled with passion, enthusiasm, change. The university of first choice, an idolized university in Nigeria, my university, “UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS”
The UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS for short, UNILAG was founded as a public research university in lagos in 1962. It is a prominent institution and one of the first generations of university in Nigeria. It was founded two years after nigerias independence from our colonial masters “Britain”.
Proffessor eni-njoku was the first black vice chancellor of the university and remained on seat till 1965. The current VC as at now is professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe.
LOCATION AND GEOGRAPHY
UNILAG is located in lagos state, Nigeria. It currently has about three campuses on the mainland of lagos and two of those campuses are located in yaba, a prominent city within lagos ( the main campuses are in akoka and its new campus at the school of radiography) the third campus is the college of medicine located at idiaraba in surulere. They are all within close range, although you may have to use transportation services to get to the locations as they are all spread out. I reside with the akoka campus.
The school geography is quite impressive and beautiful, most of the akoka foundation was built above the water as the school is surrounded by huge vast of water popularly called lagos lagoon. The main campus (akoka) has about 802 acres of land. It is a beautiful sight to behold honestly? The infrastructure is superb.

The unilag emblem is represented by a rising sun embedded in the nations flag colour (Green, white, Green), then a book and a lagoon signifying academics and conducive natural environment.
Beneath it is our motto
IN DEED AND IN TRUTH representing the democratized manner in which the university carries out her duties regardless of gender colour,ethnicity etc it represents her impartiality.
MY CHOICE OF INSTITUTION AND WHY I BELIVE IT IS THE BEST
Notable graduates, professors, musicians, actors, comedians, politicians, noble prized winner and many other great people name them, they all had their foundations in this prestigious school. I would compare my university to how Americans have pride Harvard or London, oxford.
UNILAG is ranked 3rd best university in nigeria as at 2020 and 1944 in the world. In the “Golden Age” times higher education ranking unilag came out 3rd in Africa and 2nd in Nigeria . Then 101- 150 in the world.
When I was first searching for universities to apply to, I had always heard of lagos and its industrious nature in the entertainment and commercial prowess. I had heard of many prominent figures graduating from Unilag as well. It was so far away from home, suprisingly my dad who wanted the best for me also suggested I attend it and that’s how I fought for my admission into the school.
I study Masscommunication and unilag provides opportunities for students practicing in these fields with the UNILAG RADIO STATION(unilag fm 103.1 fm) and UNILAG TV STATION(channel 184 on star-times cable). It was a great opportunity i certainly could not pass out. Most celebrities come to hold concerts within the school as many of them graduated from there. The school is really competitive and so therefore is quite hard to gain admission, competition is in everything even in sports. It has different sporting activities name them, football, basket ball, tennis, American football, track race etc a swimming pool was even built for the students and soon a swimming team would be formed.
Its infrastructure is very beautiful starting from the lagoon front, the library, hostels, cafeterias, bridges, buildings etc robots had recently been assigned to the school to improve the learning environment. I certainly. have no regrets on my choosing this great institution because i know it will certainly prepare me for the outside world.
