Good Morning my fellow steemians, Today I will be talking about sport Medicine.

Introduction to Sports Medicine

Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with prevention, evaluation, treatment and even rehabilitation of sports injuries that occur during sporting activities.

Sports medicine can also be called Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) that deals with physical fitness, treatment and prevention of sports injuries and exercise

The sole aim of sports medicine is to help people engage in safely exercise in order to achieve their training goals. Sports medicine specialists attend to so many range of physical conditions like acute traumas eg fractures, sprains, strains, and dislocations, bruises, abrasions. They can also treat chronic overuse injuries like tendonitis, degenerative diseases, and overtraining syndrome.

Professionals that Make up Sports Medicine Team

Physiotherapist

  • Physiotherapist or Physical therapists diagnose and treat athletes with different physical challenges such as sports-related injuries or disabilities.
  • They restore function to the injured parts of the body, relieve pain '
  • They are the major players in rehabilitation of sport related injury and they help athletes to return back to sports.

Note: A Physiotherapist needs an advanced post graduate training in sports medicine to become a sports physiotherapist.

Sports Physicians

  • Sports medicine physicians are medical doctors who base specialty in diagnosis and treatment of sports related injuries and diseases.
  • They also treat conditions like : Concussion and other head injuries, Chronic or acute illnesses (such as asthma, diabetes, or hypertension) .

Athletic Trainers

  • Athletic trainers work with the physicians, exercise physiologists, physical therapists and coaches in other yo prevent illness and injury related to sports .
  • Athletic trainers also prescribe rehabilitative programs that will help athletes improve their strength and prevent future injury

Exercise Physiologists

  • Exercise physiologist works with patients to improve their physical fitness.
  • They help rehabilitate people who suffer from heart problems or other chronic diseases.
  • Exercise physiologists also customized exercise for athletes to suite their body system.

Dietician/Sports Nutritionist

  • Dietetics is the study of nutrient we take and how foods are broken down in order to give the necessary energy needed muscular activity.
  • Sports Nutritionists help with weight management and nutrition.
  • They also advice athlete on food to avoid which contain banned substances.

In summary the important of all these professional can never be over emphasized, and no unit is more important than the other because they can not function perfectly well without each other.
