Good afternoon Great steemian today I will be discussing some common sport injury but with emphasis on Muscle Strain. We have different types of sport injury:

  • Sprain
  • Strain
  • Contussion
  • blisters
  • Abrasion
  • Avulsion
  • Laceration
  • Callous formation.

Muscle Strain

A muscle strain is characterized by over-stretching of muscle fibre tissue. Base on severity of the muscle strains it is divided into Grades 1, 2 or 3

GRADE 1 STRAIN

There is a damage to the muscle fibers and this is a mild strain which require 3 weeks rest to resolve.

GRADE 2 STRAIN

There is more intense damage to the muscle fibre but the muscle fibres are not the completely ruptured from the muscle and it required 3 to 6 weeks of rest.

GRADE 3 STRAIN

This is just the complete rupture of muscle fibres. In an athlete requires surgery to repair the muscle fibre and rehabilitation time usually take about 3 months.

Sign and Symptoms of Muscle

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Pain at rest
  • Weakness
  • Inability to use the muscle

Most Common Muscle Injuries in Sport

  • Adductor muscles
  • Hip flexor muscles
  • Quadriceps muscles
  • Hamstring muscles

How Does Muscle Injury Heal?

The healing process of a muscle injuries start with an inflammatory response which last for about 3 to 5 days. When the muscle undergoes inflammatory reaction the body produces chemicals which shade off the dead muscle fibers and give room for repair process to begin. The repair process consists of 3 stages:

  • Regeneration of the muscle fibers
Where new muscle fibers grow from the special cells in the muscle.

  • Formation of scar tissue: In this stage there is bleeding in between the torn muscle ends and from the blood a scaffold is formed which brings the two ends together. The scarfold will later form a scar within the muscle which makes the muscle resistant to further stretch or damage.

  • In the final stage the scar tissue matures and the collagen fibers that makes up the scar tissue aligne along the line of the external stress which makes the muscle stronger so that it can be able to withstand more force.

How are Muscle Injuries Treated?

The First Aid treatment of muscle injury includes:
-Protection of the injured part from further damage

  • Rest the injured area
  • Use Ice on the injured area
  • Apply Compression for the case of bleeding.
  • Elevate the part to aid venous return.

The aim of this protocol is to reduce bleeding within the muscle tissue.Ice therapy is the use of ice to reduce pain and swelling.

Above all regular exercise can also help to reduce the risk of muscle injury.
