Hello to everyone in this great community known as the CampusConnect community. hope we are all having a wonderful day. Today I will be dropping my entry regarding the ongoing contest in this community that has been organized by the contest in this community which has been titled my experience on campus as a new student in my university. what an amazing contest to partake in. so I urge you all to sit tight and relax while I drop my entry.
Talking about my experience in Ahmadu Bello University Campus as a new student which they often call Jambito. was very funny and embarrassing especially on the first day. I asked a lot of questions, some people told me what I needed to know and some used me to catch a cruise. you know that particular moment when you couldn't tell if you were been used to catching a cruise and somehow you later found out that you were been told the wrong answer.
An incident occurred on my very first day on campus, I was in the senate building signing my forms and I was pressed, so I met two ladies and asked them where I could ease myself and they pointed in a direction that I should open the door to my left that I will see a bathroom. so I thank them and headed straight to the direction they pointed at, on reaching there I opened the door, lo and behold people of God, It was the VC office and I didn't know. I was asking my VC where the bathroom was and immediately two security came and apprehended me, my saving grace was because I am a new student I would have been dealt with.
So the experience came in both ways, a funny and an embarrassing way.
WHAT WAS THE ATMOSPHERE LIKE?
It was different. It was cool as though its a new environment, with birds humming in the sky, trees all around, and pleasant flowers in various gardens, the air was indeed conducive at first I became Dora the explorer. I started exploring the school right from the first day. asking questions about certain places I will be visiting in a short while. places like my faculty, my department, the theatre, the lecture halls, the library, the sports center, and the social center.
The social center is the most crowded place in the school. during the evenings, the atmosphere there is so great. we get to see different people from different faculties and departments coming to the social center to mingle with friends after the lecture hours. ladies and guys coming from their hostels to meet one another and discuss individual issues.
The first week was different because I came alone and we just have to take our time to study certain people before getting to know them and probably become friends. so the first day in class was a little bit cold. no one was talking to each other because we do not know ourselves then and as such everyone was all by his/her self awaiting a lecturer from our department to come and address us as new students.
The school is so big and wide enough so there is space for everyone to breathe in clean air. with a wonderful structure that each building carries. the aesthetic gratification was neatly done and they all look beautiful. each faculty has its motto and the designs were nicely done too.
the place is so neat that everything has its place and there is a place for everything. also, the aroma from restaurants filled the atmosphere and I could not help but check into one of those restaurants in other to feel my belly. the atmosphere was indeed great and awesome it was as if I was in a different country entirely.
WHO WERE SOME OF THE PEOPLE YOU MET DURING THE FIRST WEEK IN SCHOOL?
I am an extrovert and as such I make friends easily. while we were in class on the very first day before the lecturer that was assigned to address us came, I already met a few ladies. we began to vibe little by little. we started talking about how we were able to pick the university as our first choice, our encounters during the period we were writing jamb, and how the system was coming on and off. we had a little chitchat with each other, we told ourselves our names and then exchange contacts with one another.
They were the first set of friends I started mingling with. and after that scenario, the lecturer came and addressed us all, after that he then selected the class rep and assistant. I was nominated by the ladies I just met and that was how I became the class assistant representative. after that day, I equally met some people the next day and that was because we were asked not to enter the lecture hall. After all, we came late. so we had a little pep talk and took some selfies with each other.
It was indeed a new environment and as such we get to meet new people. after classes I was heading straight to my room then I met a few of my coursemates on the way, so we exchanged greetings and we started talking from that moment. we decided to hang out that evening since we have nothing to do. it was indeed fun, my mindset changed totally. knowing fully well that the life here is quite different from that of high school, we get to put on our normal clothes, nothing like uniforms and all that, no bell ringing for break time, and everything here are just well organized. the friends I met are so cool.
DID YOU GUYS TURN OUT TO BE GREATER FRIENDS IN SCHOOL?
Yes, of course, I became the man of the people and there is this popular name my friends often call me it is Zaddy. when I came to school I had some money on me but without proper orientation on how to go about with the money. ladies can be cunny at times. often after class, they will just come and meet me calling me Zaddy in other to buy them lunch. oh my God! I was so dumb, I never knew what I was doing until the money finished. and when they noticed I was broke, they started calling me by my name which is Solomon. but then I never allowed that to cool me off.
We were still going along, and since they already know I have no money, they started helping me out and that was how I began to assist them in spending their money too. so after that, we then understood each other so well. we promised never to take advantage of each other and from that day henceforth, we became great pals and do things together. we read together, come to the class at almost the same time and when the period for examination is approaching, we set a timetable for tutorials. each person will go and master a course and everyone gets to present individually whenever we come for tutorials.
As good friends, we got each other's back. we always set a formation whenever we want to write an examination and we call it 433 formations. the brilliant persons get to stay in the middle, then the rest will either be in front or behind with that, the brilliant persons will feed answers to the persons in front and back. especially when any of us falls ill during exams, we make sure that the victim is fed with enough answers because we all know when someone falls ill during an examination, the person's performance will reduce.
Because of the love we have for one another, there was a period when one of our coursemates lost her dad and on hearing that news, I and the class rep decided to have a lecture that day. so we conveyed all the class members to the lady's house who lost her dad not quite long. it was indeed a sad day for everyone. she is Muslim and so we went as a family to greet her. individual prayers were offered to God in respect to the departed soul. and after that, we mourned with her and later cheered her up. so after that, we departed to our various destinations. as the course rep, we got her back until the moment she became fit to join us in class.
So we didn't just turn out to be great friends but we became family. assisting each other in any area and looking out for each other like family became the aim and objective. our CGPA currently is almost the same knowing fulling well we are in the second class upper, we are doing so well to maintain that result. if one of us fails, we all have failed so that is the principle we have and that is why we work as a team not just to strengthen our friendship but also to strengthen our academics.
CONCLUSION
My experience on campus as a new student was okay. normally when you see a new student one can easily tell from the looks on that person's face and the way he or she asked questions. I was called a jambito for almost six months. it was never funny on my part but the older students always see it as a way to while away time and have fun. I was mostly given the wrong descriptions of certain places I was looking for. I was toil around the school in search of a place that has been in front of me all along. but then after all was said and done, it was indeed a wonderful experience back then.
