Hello friends,
I welcome you all to my blog once again. I want to appreciate the @campusconnectng for their tireless effort in ensuring that this noble community is active at all times by organising various contests for us. This happens to be the 27th contest in the community and I am so delighted to be part of it.

This week, the contest talks about skilling up as a college student. This is indeed an amazing topic which will go a long way in helping us as steemians to showcase our intention regarding our skills and even the new ones we wish to acquire apart from the ones we are currently studying in the higher institution.

In our country Nigeria today, there are no jobs most especially for the common man. Thousands of graduates come out of the University and higher places of learning every day with no jobs to hold on to. No wonder the schools across Nigeria have introduced entrepreneurship as a course that all University students must do despite their course of studies.

Jobs can not be given to every graduate in Nigeria because the jobs are limited and for that reason, the school train students to make a living on their own without depending on any white-collar jobs from the government. In this contest, we are to explain the skill we tend to go into that can help us to survive even without the government jobs after our graduations.

The skill I wish to acquire is the information technology and software development. I am a lover of technology and for that reason, I love anything associated with technology. This was the reason why I went to the University to study computer science.

Indeed, our universities don't teach us practical knowledge on how to go about developing and improving ourselves when it comes to technology because of the expenses involved. For that reason, as a student who knows the value and the importance of the skill, we go a long way by making more research and then paying extra outside the school to acquire the practical knowledge.

As a student, while studying at the university, an IT firm was very close to my school where all these practical expositions are done since I have the intention of going into information technology and software development, I registered with the institute. There are different packages which were given to me to make my selection during registration but I choose software development.

I find joy in coding and for that reason, I decided to select that aspect of IT. I was able to work and learn from the organisation for the period of my staying on campus and the joy of it all is that I was able to develop my software during my project as an undergraduate at the university. My project title was "A recommendation system for agric extension department". This system was locally hosted and it was able to recommend crops that will do well in a particular part of Wukari L.G.A taking rainfall, sunlight and soil type as the parameter for the analysis.

With this achievement, currently, I have registered with an IT firm here in Nasarawa state where I am part of those working on developing software that will be used by students in the college of education to solve problems regarding the timetable and a biometric attendance device. This software is already available but we trying to incorporate it into the school system. So as you can see I am still making my way through achieving my information technology and software skills and am sure it is achievable.

Skills are very important in our today's world most especially in this country of ours Nigeria. There are no jobs anywhere in this country but we can make ourselves marketable by improving on our skills. I have gone to many places and also I have been privileged to see some dignitaries because of the little skills I have acquired so far.

I am not stopping here because I have to acquire more and add more value to myself. This is the reason why I have asked my brother to make inquiries for me if there is a very good IT firm in Lagos Nigeria close to where he stays so that I can go and do at least a year program there to improve myself.

It is important every one developed a skill especially at a time where jobs are scarce. With a high level skill one becomes self employed and don't need to depend on the government for a job.

Thanks friend for your comment.
