Nigeria's Educational System Is Gradually Dying - ASUU vs Federal Government

in CampusConnect2 years ago

It is not a new phenomenon in Nigeria with its terrible education system; yet, it is very unfortunate that Nigerian institutions continue to deteriorate on a daily basis. Our political leaders pay less attention to education, especially among our youth, who will be the country's future leaders.
It is truly tragic for countries without educated future leaders since no country can progress above the degree of education to which they are exposed.

All federal universities in Nigeria including my school (University Of Lagos) have been on strike for four months because the government has not paid the lecturers. I was on the phone with one of my friends who is a student at the Federal University of Ekiti, and I inquired about their resumption. He sighed and said he had given up a few months ago.

Each day, the government keeps promising to improve education in Nigeria while doing nothing about it; they keep negotiating with the Universities Union (ASUU) to pay them their dues, but it's all just a promise they haven't followed through on, which has resulted in a nationwide strike at all federal universities.

As a Nigerian student, all I have to say is that the government has failed us as youngsters and future leaders. Because of Nigeria's poor educational system, some young people believe that education is a scam because they can go to school to study a four years course and end up studying the same course for six years. This is unbearable, and once you struggle to graduate, finding work becomes difficult.

I've been at home for months, watching the news every day to see if the federal government has called off the strike by agreeing to the demands of the (ASUU), but all I see is our leaders spending millions on presidential tickets, oh what a failed country that values politics before education.

The status of education in Nigeria has caused wealthy parents to send their children abroad to study, with some deciding to stay permanently after graduation, while the children of average parents continue to struggle and suffer in the failed country, with some even turning to crime and cultism.

A country like this can only be helped and saved by God.

Bossu nice post man, if I'm not mistaken could this be towards the gate on the UNN campus? Are you a UNN student? That aside, the government don't have our interests at heart, they keep delaying the payment of the staff union but they steal more and more of that same amount under closed doors. The union doesn't want to back out until is done so we public students are kept in a stand still

Great piece from you, although we the students of LASU aren't affected by this strike, but most the students have gone home though (the unserious ones).. the government are just heartless, as in they have this funds but still refused to pay those staffs. I also heard some federal university has withdraw from the strike, while some are planing to.
