Hello my fellow steemians, how you all doing?. I believe you all are doing great.

Welcome to my blog again and I sincerely appreciate all the members of this community for their love and support towards me.

In my last post here on campus connect, I talked about coping with stress on campus and I believe you learnt some thing from it.

Today, I will be sharing with you on something very special that relates with students on campus environment. I will be sharing with you on the subject Dealing with Depression on campus

I will start by saying that depression is a state of mind characterized by low mood, a feeling of sadness and, generally a loss of interest in one's daily activities.

Depression can be seen as something that really affect one's feeling, one's thinking, one's behaviour and can definitely lead to lot of emotional trauma.

It has been stated that depression affects an estimated one in 15 adult in any given year and that women experiences depression more than men.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has pointed out saying that the most common illness worldwide and it's the leading cause of disability. It was estimated that approximately 350 million people are affected by depression globally.

Now in our campus environment, any individual or person's who is/are depressed tend to exhibit traits such as persistent feeling of sadness, hopelessness or emptiness, irritability, frustration or restlessness, loss of interest in activities or hobbies that such person used to be enjoying, difficulty in sleeping, loss of weight, impaired thinking and lack of concentration which may likely lead to suicide.

In recent times, cases of suicide have been rampant in the society and even in our campuses and depression has been acclaimed to be the major cause.

Several incident could lead to depression and this include situations such as the death of loved ones, losing a job, being victim of a physical assault.

Several factors can lead to depression of which are as follows;

  • BIOCHEMISTRY:- This include the differences created in certain chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain may contribute to symptoms of depression.

  • PERSONALITY:- This include people with low-esteem, who are easily overwhelmed by stress or who are generally pessimistic appear to be more likely to experience depression.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES:- This include the continuous exposure to violence, neglect, abuse or poverty may make some people more vulnerable to depression, worry, anxiety and hopelessness.

Furthermore, individual resort to committing suicide due to traumatic events such as persistent academic failure, financial issues, martial abuse or difficulty, unfulfilled dreams e.t.c

Depression, when left untreated can wreak havoc on a person's quality of life, worsen symptoms of other diseases and could be a primary risk factor for suicide. The increase in the rate of suicide nowadays may be traceable to the untreated cases of depression.

Some questions like: Are we immune to depression? Are we supposed to be depressed? Or how can depression be prevented or dealt with? will be ringing in our mind beckoning for answers.

As matter of fact, we are not immune to the troubles and challenges of life but this condition of depression can be prevented with the following steps:

  1. By getting enough sleep.
  2. By being active and engaging yourself in exercises.
  3. By eating healthy balanced diet.
  4. Remember God's covenant and loving kindness.
  5. Stop listening to yourself to commit suicide rather start talking to yourself positively.
  6. Avoid worrying and anxiety.

Stress management is very important. A stressful life triggers the brain to release a flood of stress hormones and if the stress system is persistently activated, the system malfunctions and cause the brain damage which could lead to depression.

Therefore, managing stress through rest and exercise helps to reduce the effects of such neurochemical on the brain and releases the endorphins, the "feel good" chemical which is related to good mood.

Finally, whatever the causes of depression, it can be overcome if you follow the steps listed above.

Thank you for your time in reading this post, I appreciate very much.

Depression is real. It can happen to anyone at anytime. We all must have gone through a bout of depression at certain points in our lives.

"Stress management is important" I love this

Sorrounding yourself with friends with positive vibes is one major way of curbing depression. Sometimes it comes up out of the blue as 'one of those times', other days it is due to stress especially school stress which is quite rampant in medical school.
Let's reach out to one another in our low times and make the world a brighter place.

Your post is educative.
