As we all know, Fever is the most common symptom faced by humans, most especially among students in campus. A person will sleep today, waking up the next day just to demand for paracetamol from his/her roommate because they are having fever. Fever however is the rise of bodys temperature from its normal range which is 36.2 degree celcius to 37.2 degree celcius. When the ody temperature rises from this range to a higher range, fever is said to occur.

TYPES OF FEVER

There are different types of fever and they include:

  • Constant fever

  • Remittent fever

  • Intermittent fever

  • Irregular fever

  • Inverse fever

  • Lysis fever

  • Crisis fever

  • Pseudo crisis

CONSTANT FEVER: This is a case there is constant and continous elevation of the body temperature above normal which does not vary more than 1.1-1.2 degree celcius within 24hrs. E.g in sickness such as pneumonia, malaria, typhoid e. t. c

REMITTENT FEVER: this happens whennthere is a temperature variation of more than 1.1 - 2 degree celcius but with the lowest temperature not reaching the normal temperature within 24hrs. This occurs in sickness like Endocarditis

INTERMITTRENT FEVER: in this type of fever, the temperature swings from normal to subnormal, moderate to high in the interval of 1-3days. There is a variation of more than 1.1-2.2 degree celcius between the high and low termperature. This occurs in sickness like malaria.

IRREGULAR FEVER: this type of fever is not clearly defined but may show some of the characteristics of some of the other types of fever

INVERSE FEVER: The highest temperature is seen in the morning and the lowest temperature in the evening. This is found in students that read throughout the night.

LYSIS FEVER: this is a gradual return of high or low temperature to the normal body temperature and it takes up to 3days to return.

CRISIS FEVER: in this type of fever, the temperature falls back to normal sharply within 24hrs and there is a corresponding improvement in the general condition of the student.

PSEUDO CRISIS FEVER: This kind of fever occur when there is an underlying disease. It occurs before before crisis fever occurs. In this type, there is a decline in body temperature and this decline is not accompanied by any corresponding improvement in the patients general wellbeing.

CAUSES OF FEVER

There are different causes of fever, ranging from a viral infection to a bacterial infection. However, its basically caused by anything that disturbs the normal functioning of the body. Its causes includes;

  • Viral infection

  • Bacterial infection

  • Fungal infection

  • Haemorrhage

  • Tumor

  • Inflammation

  • Stress

  • Insomnia, etcetera.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF FEVER

The signs and symptoms of fever includes;

  • Headache

  • Cold feeling but the body is hot

  • Rapaid pulse(i will make a post on vital signs and how to count vitals for you to understand the meaning of pulse rate)

  • Discomfort

  • Restlessness

  • Pinched face

  • Thirst (at times)

PREVENTIONS OF FEVER

Fever cannot be completely avoided so long as a persons homeostasis is impaired. However, the following ways can be used to avoid falling for fever in campus

  • A good personal hygiene; personal hygiene not only save us from fever, but it gives us a very reputable appearance and aids in the strength of the immune system. With a good personal hygiene, a person will be free from disease causing microbes, just normal flora of the body will remain.
  • Regular medical checkup; this is essential to check is there is any disease in the body. If there is any, the doctor will help alleviate it so that it will not cause fever or other symptoms.
  • Reduce stress; Abstain from any over-demanding side hustle as a student, because stress causes not only fever, but also muscle malaise and it also disturbs the mental health.
MANAGEMENT OF FEVER

If your coursemate, roommate or any one complains about fever, help the person by doing the following;

  • Aquire consent and explain the procedure to the person so that they will comply with the procedure you are about to carry out.

  • Keep the person in a comfortable position.

  • Give enough fluid to replace lost body fluid

  • Expose the person to air, open windows and put on the fan

  • Tepid sponge the person (dip a clean cloth in a water that has room temperature and use this wet clothing to clean the persons faced and chest even though the person complains of cold). The reason for this, is to enable the body undergo heat loss through evaporation.

  • Give paracetamol according to prescription on leaflet

CONCLUSION
Fever is the abnormal rise of temperature from it's normal state to a state in which the body's metabolic activities will be altered. Fever is caused by a virus, bacteria, fungal and even our activities of daily living and it comes with different signs and symptoms. Fever can be managed pharmacologically through the administration of paracetamol and non-pharmacologically through tepid sponging and exposing the student involved to air.

It seems every disease condition has fever as one of its signs.
