If you really want to have a very smart and Sharp retentive memory, then you really need to study wide.
For instance, you are given a material to study in preparation for exams. It'd be much better if you read the material, make research about that topic online too and compare together.
This will make it easier for you to deduce an understanding about the topic.
So during the exam, you can easily remember how you spotted strings of that nature.
