Whenever the word “peace" is mentioned, many of us will immediately think of a very ambient scenery like a very serene beach, a quiet mountaintop, or maybe a ceasefire in some war-torn areas. However, peace is not one-dimensional. It can be both internal and external, but sometimes the outer one is expressed in the form of joy, while at other times, they seem worlds apart.
In this creativewriting, I am going to explore the difference between inner peace and outer joy: what they truly mean, how they influence an individual, and why inner peace is very essential for a fulfilled life.

What Is Inner Peace?

Inner peace can be referred to as a state of mental alertness and emotional tranquility. It is about staying composed, grounded and focused regardless of the chaos surrounding you. Achieving this kind of serenity involves a deep connection with yourself and with Almighty God. It often needs a combination of mindfulness, self-awareness, emotional regulation, and self-acceptance.
For example, someone who has found inner peace might handle disappointments with resilience and calmness rather than frustration and blame. Instead of allowing anxiety or fear to take over, they respond with clarity and calm. That is the work of inner peace.

What Is Outer joy?

This can be referred to as the joy that is influenced by the world/persons around us.
While inner peace is deeply personal, outer joy revolves around our surroundings. It refers to peace among communities, between nations, or even within family and social environments, but this is not always guaranteed.

At a global scale, outer peace or joy represents diplomatic efforts, conflict resolution, and international cooperation. Think of Nobel Peace Prize, the United Nations, or ceasefire agreements. How long does this always come through? Or how long does it last?
When Russia went into war with Ukraine, and the U.S.A as the current World power tried to stop them from further damage, her intervention fell on deaf ears of Putin who derives outer joy in his military prowess and accumulated sophisticated weapons.

Although he may get outer joy by watching from his office and notice how his military forces are fighting, there is no guarantee of his personal happiness or inner peace when he sees Ukraine still striving.

Share some lessons related to the above two!

Joy is the fruit of a right relationship with God and is not something one can create by their own efforts.
So for instance, if someone has a problem, maybe his bike has just been stolen and he thinks that the only way he can forget it is to indulge in heavy drinking in company with his friends. Outer joy maybe there at the moment he steps out with friends but it will be short-lived once he left the the company of his friends.
Joy in a person's life is in direct proportion as he walks with the Almighty God and not when he thinks he can make it with friends alone. The saying that “even in the calmest settings, someone may still struggle internally" highlights just how important inner peace is to humans compared to outer joy.
Moreso, since Joy is a fruit of the spirit, it enables a person to rejoice even in times of trouble, in celebration and in fellowship. This true Joy enables people to enjoy all that God has given to them not waiting for someone to affirm or approve him being joyful. This is an inner peace.
