WHAT IS FASHION?

The concept of fashion is ever changing with times. Some define it as a popular style of clothes, hair and so on at a particular time or place.

We tend to wear clothes of fancy things that appeal to our personality, that is who we are. As the old saying goes; how you dress is how you will be addressed. And this is one of the major reasons why fashion has been attached with so much importance in the society. Individuals would certainly want to be addressed a certain way. We all have an imaginary description of how we want to be seen as or treated as in a society or social gathering. And fashion has the ability to accomplish just that.

SOCIAL ISSUES IN FASHION

In a world where fashion is attached with utmost importance, we have seen subsequent changes and development concerning it over time. And this has a lot of impact on the society, be it good or bad. Especially on the younger generation.

MORAL DEGENERATION

Moral degeneration is the process where by the quality of morals and good virtues in a society is becomes worse and less acceptable. Fashion has in some sense affected the quality of good morals in a society.

With the emergence of different fashion styles and trends, the moral values of a society has now been corrupted due to the indecent, too revealing, nude clothings which most of our youths has now adopted in the society. Indirectly corrupting the upcoming ones, who cannot go anywhere without their eyes being exposed to such obscenity and immodesty.

You now see the female folks going for short, tight clothings that puts to little to the imagination. The male folks as well, some sagging their trousers, some, keeping inappropriate hairstyle that makes them look irresponsible, hostile and rugged. Due to all these indecent dressing we sometimes often hear cases of rape, sexual assault and abuse. This is all too disappointing to say the least. It is a shame to see that most of the people indulging in this act of immodesty are the youths, who are supposed to be the leaders of tomorrow.

IMMODESTY

Immodesty, in this sense, is an act of behaving or dressing in a way that shows your body or attract sexual attention. In this modern world, it is most certain that we have all thrown modesty out the window. Immodesty is now a thing of normal of which many people has adopted in the society. What was once frowned upon and deemed unacceptable in a society is now considered normal and acceptable due to the various fashion trends invoke.

MISJUDGEMENT

Due to the kind of judgmental society we live in, we tend to judge others by their appearance and clothings without getting to know the real person.This is as a result of fashion. Fashion teaches people to judge others who are poorly dressed and less fashionable. Due to the ever changing fashion trends we tend to judge people we meet by their dressing and appearance without getting to know what they are all about.

POSITIVE EFFECTS OF FASHION ON THE SOCIETY

In as much as there are several societal issues concerned with fashion, it still has its perks. There are also numerous positive effects of fashion in the society. Some of which include;

• It helps us to connect with individual of the same interest and fashion sense.
• It helps portrays an attractive personality.
• It increases bonds with like-minded people.
• It boost an individual level of self confidence.
• It enables us explore the diversity of life.
• It allows us live a colourful life.

CONCLUSION

Fashion has its advantages and disadvantages in a society. It is left for us to choose which we should adopt. Remember fashion is a way of self expression. Let's not get too obsessed with fashion trends and forget who we are while trying to fit into the society.
