History of Jahangirnagar University: The history of Jahangirnagar University dates back to the late 1960s when the demand for universities in the region increased. Students and intellectuals in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) felt the need for a university to promote education and research in various disciplines. In response to the growing demand, the Government of Pakistan has decided to establish a new public university in East Pakistan. On 20 August 1970, Jahangirnagar University was officially established by ordinance under the Jahangirnagar University Act 1970. The university is named after the Mughal emperor Jahangir. On January 12, 1971, the university officially began academic activities with 150 students enrolled in its four faculties: Economics, Geography, Mathematics and Statistics. Professor Mofazzal Haider Chaudhury became the University's first Vice-Chancellor.
During the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, the Jahangirnagar University campus played an important role as a refuge for many freedom fighters and intellectuals seeking asylum.
After Bangladesh gained independence in December 1971, Jahangirnagar University continued to expand its academic programs, faculty and infrastructure to meet the growing demand for higher education in the country.
