Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple Srirangam (திருவரங்கம் அரங்கநாத சுவாமி கோயில்)

UNESCO Asia Pacific Award of Merit 2017 for cultural heritage conservation awarded Temple is no other than Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple, Srirangam a Hindu Temple dedicated to Bishnu located 12 kilometres away from city Tiruchirappalli of Tamil Nadu, river Kavari and Kollidam encompasses the temple. It is one of the oldest functional temple of the world. It is second largest temple of the world having highest temple complex area in India and one of the highest religious complex of the world. The temple is also known as Periyakovil.
Sapta-Prakaram design of the temple area allows separate enclosure for different areas like sanctum, gopuram, services and living area. The main temple located at the centre surrounded by five inner enclosure of the complex. Pilgrims and visitors can reach the Sanctum through many gopurams connection of Sapta-Prakaram enclosure. The invasion and destruction are deprecated on rampart wall which was constructed after mediaeval centuries.
Temple has a striking tower along with two huge Prakarams around the shrine at the entrance. A pavilion, lined with pillars leads to the main garbhagriha. These pillars are intricately carved, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of the people of the mid mendivlian era.
All such temples were built during some kingdom spanning over several generations. That is cultural architectural heritage of India visited by thousands of tourists every year. No doubt those ancient structures are engineering and artistic marvels. How they were made centuries back are mysteries.
From the gift and donation it received spent on several activities like infrastructure development, Hospital construction, Academic and Education facilities, free kitchen which may be called as Temple Social Responsibilities.
Online booking of limited tickets is available from the temple website. If one book online, you may be able to see Lord quickly. The ticket rate is ₹100 for speed dharshan and free for general entry.
