"What an aged man sees afar standing on his feet, even a child who climbs the iroko tree won't see a shadow of it". This is an adage said by our parents and grandparents. They've lived long on earth and life has exposed them to various situations. Is it really true that experiences they had, really comes with age or circumstances? It's a profound question worth answering, that's why I joined this challenge. Let's proceed...
How do you define maturity? |

Maturity can be defined in so many ways. Just like the seed we sow germinate gradually, so as maturity is. When we develop emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual awareness gradually, it's a sign of maturity. This maturity will help us as individuals navigate life's knowledge and its complexity. When we're able to take care of our responsibilities without seeking help from parents or guardians is also known as maturity.
Maturity also means facing the outcome or results of our actions being it good or bad. They're some point in life we want to make a decision about a particular thing, and at this point you go to no one but to decide on yourself and ready to face the consequences, that's maturity. Humility is a sign of maturity. Here is a simple scenario about myself and maturity.
I can vividly remember when i had a fight with my cousin, my parents would have intervened, but they didn't. Why? They wanted to see my stage of maturity. I walked down to my cousin that faithful day, sat him down, and apologize deeply, even though i wasn't the one at fault. After that, peace reigned and i was respected for pursuing peace. My mother said "Now you're matured, you should take some actions yourself".

Experiences can come from both age and circumstances, in what essence? As we grow older, we naturally accumulate experiences. They experiences we had when we were at 20s can't be compared with the one at 60s and above. Let's give this small illustration. If you're using a slow-cooking equipment like stove to cook, the recipe used for the meal will produce its aroma gradually and not sudden. Just as the recipe, we gradually accumulate experiences during our lifetime on earth.
On the other hand, circumstances are like the spices and ingredients we add to the meal, they can be so sudden and intense. Life's circumstances, such as unexpected events, relationships, or career changes, can also bring experiences. These circumstances can be sudden, intense, and transformative, forcing us to adapt and grow.
They might include significant life events like marriage, parenthood, or overcoming adversity. Circumstances can accelerate our growth and provide experiences that might not have come with age alone.
In essence, experiences come from a combination of age and circumstances. Age provides a gradual accumulation of experiences, while circumstances can bring sudden and transformative experiences that shape us in profound ways. Both are essential to our personal growth and development.

We're living in a digital world, so I believe older people can also learn many things from us, the youth. Let's talk about the most common thing older people can learn from the youth, it's Technology. Youth are more advanced and familiar with the recent technology and social media which could help the older ones stay connected with their loved ones.
An old man walked down to yesterday, he needed to learn a particular thing from me, which was updating his android phone from the old version to a new one. I showed him how it's done step by step, and he thanked me so much because he was grateful. What happened between me and the old man yesterday simply shows that they can actually learn, not just few things, but many things from the youth.

Maturity is an indication of humbleness just like the example you gave of you having a fight with you cousin despite you weren't at fault you decided to be humble and plead so there can be peace and unity.
As we grow older we tend to understand things more while circumstances leave us without a choice but to learn quickly

Exactly @yancar, it's a decision to make if you're to act matured or not. Most people grow beards, tall and huge but yet still, they can't take actions, decide and ready to face the consequences that'll come with their actions and decisions. I appreciate you for your time.
