Moistening the cardboard that will serve as the canvas and securing it flat with adhesive tape is a preliminary technique used for water-based pigments. (It also applies to a sheet of paper.)

This prepares it and prevents it from bending or warping when you begin painting with tempera, gouaches, or watercolors.

Smiles cardboards can be used for so many things,like drawing, painting and even making different things with it like cube and other objects, and the reason it must be wet is so that the colors can sink in very well and to give it the Ankara look,it's like the reason you prime a canvas.
