The Power of Body Language - That Help Advance Your Life

in LifeStyle4 years ago

Many people believe that body language is only for those in show business and things like learning body language are unnecessary if you continue to pursue your goals. However, the days of sitting at the table and delivering results are long gone. In today's world, companies need their employees to be dynamic and resilient.

Companies need people who don't say NO in return and who always strive to create a positive image of themselves and the companies they represent. Understanding people is the first step to improving relationships, and learning body language gives you an honest understanding of the reactions, feelings, and thoughts of the person you are talking to.

The way people cross their arms, shrug their shoulders, move their eyes, change their tone is almost never a conscious act, and this is why many people are “caught in a lie” when their words do not match their body language.

Imagine yourself in a workout room where you are being taught “Confidence,” and you notice your coach walking into the room with a thick book in hand and yawning all the time. He comes in and says, "We're going to talk about self-confidence today, and I assure you it will be fun." I'm sure the thought will immediately come to your mind: " I don't think so ."

In other words, you can see that our actions say a lot about who we are and how we feel, even if our words don't. This is why the saying “Actions speak louder than words” is so important in our lives. Understanding the messages our actions can deliver to viewers will help us identify areas that might hinder our success.

It will also help us learn our personal tricks, that is, what actions we do when we are irritated, tired, or aggressive at our points. If we study these actions, we can change them so as not to create a negative image of ourselves.

For example, you subconsciously point your finger at the person you are talking to when you want to emphasize a point. However, it may happen that the other person finds it threatening or offensive. Now, even if your intentions are honest, you can still be misinterpreted.

Take a look at the picture below. If you study just the expression, you will notice that this is an image of a nice young man who looks bright and enthusiastic, who you might want to talk to. But when you combine this with outstretched fingers as well as a pointing gesture, it automatically adds to that kind of self-confidence and arrogance.

Now, can you force yourself to believe that this person is telling the truth when he says: I like to learn as much as possible. I believe in team-spirit and respect other's opinions . "?

The solution to this problem is to observe yourself in front of a mirror and try to act out your reactions in different situations. The idea shouldn't be obvious. Remember that body language is subconscious. Continue role-playing, but keep recording your facial expressions and body movements. Pay special attention to the eyebrows, arms, palms, shoulders, and head.

Body language - pitfalls

While body language teaches us a lot about the other person, there are certain areas where applying body language teachings can be tricky. Let's discuss these cases.

Body language is determined by many factors, and for this reason, body language is never accurate when studied for just one part of the human body. Studying how someone uses space, regardless of how they look, talk, and walk, will not give an accurate picture of what kind of person they are. Studying just eye movement won't give you a complete picture unless you see how he uses his legs, hands, fingers, etc.

This is why experts say that body language is like a puzzle in which you have to match different inputs from different sources to get the complete picture. This grouping of the basics of body language to obtain complete information is called "clusters of understanding." Individually, these factors will give you a false or incorrect assessment of a person.

Incorrect posture

One of the biggest contributors to poor body language is poor posture. A person slouching in a chair and not sitting right at their desk while working will at first glance make a very unprofessional impression on you, however, if you judge this person only by this factor, chances are that later you will find out that his stoop is the result of abnormal skeletal growth, health problems, arthritis, etc.

People also adopt withdrawn body language when they are cold, which is not uncommon, especially in times of centrally air-conditioned workplaces. This will not give you an accurate understanding of a person's body language at all.

Sudden movements

Many nervous people are prone to jerky movements while talking or performing an action. They may fiddle with taking off their jacket, or they may nervously fiddle with the doorknob, and sometimes they may spill food.

However, this does not always mean that people who make sudden movements are nervous. People who are stressed, sick people, and people who have arrived after a long winter trip are also prone to jerky movements solely due to muscle reactions. These cases of isolated body language can cause false body language learning.

So folks, we hope you got an interesting and informative reading about the basics of body language and how to use them in business. Remember the trick is to learn body language in groups, not in isolation. Just watching your head tilt, but ignoring the sarcastic tone can create a false sense of honest conversation.

But most importantly, you must understand that when you learn the body language of others, others will constantly learn yours. So try to find time in your daily schedule and work on your body language to stop sending threatening or hostile messages with gestures and signals when you don't really mean any harm!

Good luck!

I enjoyed reading this post, quite interesting. It seems like we learn to control our bodies since childhood but it is more serious work, frankly speaking. We should put more attention to our gestures and facial expression. When I was in college, I had to prepare for public speaking sometimes. I was sure, it is not a big problem, I can do it. Well, I did not know where I should put my hands while speaking! I started walking around a room... Definitely, I was interested in improving my body language after my unsuccessful attempts. I even found some books on this topic in the college library. And recently, I came across another interesting material on differences between men and women using body language: https://ivypanda.com/essays/communication-differences-between-men-and-women-using-body-language/
I am sure that everybody who works with people needs to develop body language as a business skill.
