Film Review: Prometheus

Ridley Scott's Prometheus is a magnificent science fiction film, all the more interesting because it provokes answers to questions about the unorigin of human life. It's in the classic tradition of Golden Age science fiction, echoing Scott's "Aliens" (1979) but creating a world of its own. I love the material, it's a seamless story, the perfect combination of special effects and perfection, in the spirit of effective 3-D filming that doesn't distract.
The opening scenes show a world with only one animal, a pale humanoid creature, on a high ridge surrounded by magnificent scenery. This human eats something that causes vomiting and rapid physical decline. The vomit then enters the flowing water, where it appears to become a living cellular structure. Where is this place? Is it the earth? Who is present and why is it alone and naked? Is this scene a visualisation of the theory that life first arrived on Earth from outer space?
In 2093 it is cut into a human spacecraft, limiting "Prometheus" to a longer period of time than the opening of "2001". There is reason to believe that human life may have originated there. It was an Earth-sized planet in lunar orbit, and at first it seemed a disappointment: there was nothing more and more to breathe than air. But the crew noticed a straight line on the surface, and it is well known that there are no straight lines in nature.
The line leads to a giant dome or pyramid, and the film takes place mainly inside the dome and Prometheus. But let's put the plot on hold and introduce two crew members: Elizabeth Shaw (Laumy Rapace) wears a cross around her neck believing that life ultimately has a divine origin. Her boyfriend, Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall Green), accuses her, a scientist, of abandoning centuries of Darwinism. The questions they find in the pyramids open up. Aliens in human form, faking their deaths, actually have DNA that is a perfect match for our own. So they could bring life to Earth, but why? From the moon, where they slept inside the pyramids, or from another planet on a distant planet? Why did they stop here? What are they waiting for?
The film develops scenes of horror to rival "Aliens", although it relies more on action and weapons than on the film's use of shadows and silence. For me, the most intriguing scenes involved the crew exploring passages and caves inside pyramids, apparently off the beaten track for ages, and the experiences of some hibernating aliens. The main member of this group is David (Michael Fassbender), an android, who knows or can find out more or less everything, even the language of the aliens, being a kind of walking, talking, nothing afraid, Hal 9000.
The alien race in Prometheus possesses a physical trait that reminds me of "aliens" and countless other movies, because: the elements can detach themselves and enter other bodies as hostile parasites. This leads to an amazing sequence in which Elizabeth, alone on the ship, finds herself pregnant with an alien thing and somehow finds the will to control the robotic surgical device and remove it. Her gradual oxygenation after a showdown suggests such ingenuity; Raumi Rapace ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," 2009) here continues the tradition of terrifying female power begun by Sydney Weaver in "Aliens.
Another strong woman on board, Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron), a privately funded representative of the Prometheus Corporation. She treats others like her employees and believes she always speaks up for the wishes of the company. The ship's captain, Janek (Idris Elba), doesn't like it when people make do with scientific knowledge being nothing more than a pilot for a serious job.Janek has the most interesting evolution from cynical hipster in his first scenes into a man with the ability to know the truth about what he sees
The most tantalising element is how the twins of DNA play these roles. Did they create life on earth? The possibility that two identical DNAs coincide is unthinkable. Charley trolls Elizabeth, demonstrating their existence and proving his faith. Her obvious response is: where did they come from? The mystery is embedded in an adventure film with stunning visuals, expert fears, challenging ideas and enough answered questions for the inevitable sequel.
