Reviewing Movies I Don't Like: Every Superhero Movie

Movie after movie, reboot after reboot, the superhero genre is one that simply refuses to die.

Marvel and DC are becoming stronger cinematic giants with each release, and it's slowly drowning the artistic nature of the box office. Competing against a giant that's earning a billion dollars per release is a battle not worth starting for others.

I find each Superhero movie is the same: a weak individual slips into a series of unfortunate events that leads them to the discovery of great powers; the character enjoys those powers for a while, until a stronger villain appears and challenges them. The two battle out and, well, neither really wins, as the next entry focuses on their battles, among other vigilantes and villains that seemingly appeared out of nowhere.

It isn't just the incredibly linear style of narrative I dislike; cinematography is something that is simply awful: action shots are comprised of multiple points-of-view in quick succession, in which very little is actually seen. A character getting pushed back can be filmed from three different angles, as for some reason, we need to be made to believe that such an action is incredibly quick and interesting.

Often, to keep people actually interested in the film itself, there's forced comedy to make the viewer feel as if what they are watching actually is worth the time. I'd like to point out the sheer amount of pop culture references that are dated within three months after release: let's be real, pretty much everyone dislikes pop culture references.

Superhero films often feel like they are made with little effort simply to provide marketing to the plethora of other products Marvel/DC are selling. Merchandising and mass-consumerism is where it's at in this age of glorified geek culture.
