The notion that culture is a way of life of a group of people cannot be overlooked. In the Akan culture, there are certain norms that we pay attention to. Example: Culture which is the way of life of a group of specific groups. I am an Akan and in our culture there are setting guidelines and principals that a child passes through from childhood to adulthood. This transition is very critical since it tells what the child will become of in the near future.

Today, I wish to share with you about the charity that is taught at home among the Akans through the transition of a childhood to adulthood.

Example: An Akan child who is trained with culture wouldn't be going around littering after an item used needs to be disposed at the right place in case there is a dustbin or not. He rather keeps it in his bag and disposes when he or she gets home.

An Akan who is trained with its culture, whenever he sees an elderly person carrying a luggage, he or she goes to assist the elderly one. This we believe has blessings and it is a sign of respect that the child was brought up from a good home.

An Akan child who comes from a traditional Akan home uses please whenever speaking with an adult. That marks the child as belonging to that system. Everybody likes a child who was brought well around him or her.

An Akan whose left hand isn't busy will not use his or her left hand to take a gift or an object from an elderly person. This we believe as a sign of respect and all Akans go by this norm.

It is a taboo for a lady who is undergoing menstrual cycle to visit water bodies or even bath in them. We believe that, that act is filthy and defaces the water bodies. Also, in the olden days, ladies in their menstrual period were not allowed to go to farm when the menstruation period is ongoing.

In conclusion, the Akans pay particular attention to their culture and this is what holds them and preserve their lands and traditions. With time, due to modernization, some of these norms are fading away.

Thank you for your time.

Best Regards
