Mindful Monday - Communing with Nature...

in Natural Medicine5 years ago

Have you ever considered getting away from everything and going for a specific period of time to just be in nature?

Folks go for "Wilderness Solos", setting aside 24 hours to get out in the wilderness and commune with nature.

Go for a "Wilderness Solo"

I'm fortunate that I can step out my doorstep and I'm right in the midst of a pine meadow!

Even with that, I had set one of my goals to communing with nature more. The other goal I had was to simplify my life and that is coming along nicely, as you can see in some of my previous posts here and here.

Summer I find easier to be out communing with nature but even in the winter there can be such a beautiful winter wonderland out there that I will spend hours outside before the cold brings me in to warm up. With just a little conscious effort there seems to be ample opportunity to be out in the great outdoors!

Never heard of a "Wilderness Solo" or not to sure how to go about communing with nature - here's some pointers -

  • Make the commitment to do a 24 hour solo which will give you a day and a night and yes! Solo means doing it alone!

  • Find a spot which is the most in the wilderness as you can get. You will mark out an area where you will remain for the 24 hours.

  • Remember you are just there to commune with nature, nothing else! Forget about building a fire and no need for bringing along a book, nothing to "busy" yourself!

  • Your disconnected from cyberspace, time to connect to the natural world!

  • Turn that switch and let everything go!

  • Let the mind slow and begin to get into a meditative rhythm with nature.

Remember how you were when you were a child, that sense of wonder and so in the moment, never questioning if they were a part of nature, they just are?

Let yourself feel that way again, being a part of nature, drop that role of trying to control nature or feeling separate. Observe all the organisms around you and realize that you are an organism too, part of multitude making up this big wide world!

As you relax into this experience and begin to inhabit the expansiveness of every passing moment, realizations will come about and you will begin to get some different perspectives, perhaps be better able to see your place in the world. Perhaps you will have the realization about your orientation to time. Are you one to be watching the clock? Are you trying to save time, schedule things? Do you want to be a time server or be more in tune with nature and it's seasons, sunrises and sunset? It is a different rhythm, that of nature!

Enjoy your solitude (although as part of nature you are never really alone.) Allow yourself to slip into a more child-like state engaging with the moments!

In the woods a man casts off his years, as the snake his slough, and at what period soever of life, is always a child - Ralph Waldo Emerson

When that 24 hour period is done carry those realizations and new perspectives into your daily life.

Every day is a new day, greet the dawn, know that it is good to be alive, a part of nature!

I'd love to hear of your experiences if you decide to do a "Wilderness Solo" or how you commune with nature!

I'd not heard of this but I think it's just a wonderful idea! Something many people probably desperately need.

Loved the dragonfly!

I do this a lot, glad to know it has a cute name - love it!
I often travel and camp alone just to reconnect with nature and myself. I think everyone should try to do it, even if just once :)

Wonderful that you take the time to reconnect and it would be great if more people did the same - make for a more peaceful place with folks more in tune with nature!

I think so too! People wouldn't be so unhappy and stressed if they connected more with Mother Earth

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

What an excellent idea! A wilderness solo sounds perfect, I bet our society could benefit a lot from that.

This sounds lovely! Although I live pretty close to nature, it would still be difficult to find a place here where I could camp without being spotted.

This sounds exciting, adventurous and more importantly, very healthy.

We all think that we're connected by always being available / online but it actually makes us disconnect from ( our ) nature.

Beautiful post and lovely pictures!
