Keeping my brain active and strengthening the bond with my loved ones by solving crossword puzzles.
My grandma' always told me...
"You should solve crosswords puzzles to keep your mind sharp and active"
I remember her always solving the crossword puzzles in the newspapers and magazines she bought. For her age, she had amazing memory and math skills, unlike her children and grandchildren, who tend to forget everything.
When I reached a certain age I dared to start solving the blanks she left. One day I started buying crossword puzzle books, I always bought two, one for her and one for me. I never had the habit as ingrained as she did, so she always solved all her crossword puzzles before I did. When this happened, we would solve the crossword puzzles in my books together.
Today, while researching this topic on the internet, I came across an interesting article. It highlights the benefits that this brings to our brain but also points out another benefit that is very important to me...
They trigger bonding if solved in a group.
I mentioned collaborative cruciverbalism above. In plain words, it means working together in a group. The group may consist of cooperative couples, a band of brothers, a society of sisters, or a flock of friends. According to Lukits, working in a group will “improve the speed of thinking and talking.” Solving puzzles in a group can also strengthen social bonds. Source
I had no idea that sharing these moments that seemed insignificant at the time could mean so much. My grandmother passed away a few months ago and last week, while my aunt was cleaning and tidying things in her house, she found one of our crossword puzzle books. The book is from 2015. To have it back in my hands after so long and her no longer being here with us is a reminder of all the good things we shared and how close we always were.
About 15 days ago, before knowing all this information I started doing something similar with @adamlaberenjena. We have been solving word puzzles together and he liked doing this, something that surprised me since he only likes to play games on his phone or computer. Now I understand that it's not just a game or a brain workout, but also about spending quality time with your loved ones.
Thank you so much for stopping by.
Lots of love,
W.

Mi abuela' siempre me decía...
Mucho amor,
W.
