HOW GEOGRAPHY BECAME ON OF MY BEST SUBLECT IN SCHOOL
Hello steemians, I'm new to this platform, seeing that this community has to with one of my best subjects in my secondary school days. I just believe that I'm highly welcomed.
After my primary school, I got admitted into secondary school, and I was not opportune to school in town, then schooling in a village set up didn’t look good to me because I wasn’t exposed to many things and almost everything I learned was more like stories except for few subjects. It was all boring for me because I’ve always been that inquisitive child who wants to know everything, and I always wanted to practice what I’ve learned. Since I got no choice I had to manage it that way.
The secondary school set up in my country is subdivided into two categories: Junior and Senior secondary and each category last for three years. I was promoted to secondary school session after three years and I was more confused as new subjects were introduce to me, as far as I’m concern, it was just like that they are telling me stories.
The first week in my senior secondary school 1 (SS1) I got introduce to geography as a subject, it was quite interesting but I couldn’t see all the things I was taught. And at some point, I got so angry as I couldn’t understand those things.
When I got to the second year of my senior secondary school, I was taught types of rocks in Geography then I was confused the more as I couldn’t get a glimpse of it. So whenever they are saying Igneous rock, Sedimentary rock, or Metamorphic rock, I will be asking how does it look like? But I didn’t get any reasonable answer that satisfied me.
During one of the holidays I had to travel with my guardian to Benue State in Nigeria, we passed through Cross River State. As the journey continues, our car had a little problem along Akamkpa Local Government Area in Cross River state, so we had no option than to stop and see how to fix it. As we were trying to fix the car, I used that opportunity to ask my guardian certain questions about that place and he was very happy to give me the answers I needed. After a long discussion, he pointed his hand to a particular road and said that is the road to the quarry-where rocks is being crushed into smaller sizes, so I decided to follow the road even though I couldn’t get to the real site but I was able to see samples of different kinds of rocks along the road and I was so happy to see how rock really look like, I also saw rocky mountains along the road and everything I learn about types of rocks in school was becoming so real to me at that point and my love for geography increased. When I finally came back from the trip, it was as if I’m the only person that has sight amidst blind people, So anytime new topics were introduced, I was so excited to learn because I knew that I can see those things somewhere and they are real.
