New weekly contest of geographic photo: Pictures of Rabbits
Rabbit
Rabbits are small mammals with short, fuzzy tails, whiskers, and long ears. There are over 30 species in the world, and although they live in a variety of habitats, they share similar characteristics.
Size
Rabbits vary in size from the size of a cat to that of a small child. Pygmy rabbits, for example, can be as short as 8 inches (20 centimeters) and weigh less than a pound. Larger species can reach 20 inches (50 cm) in length and weigh up to ten pounds (4.5 kilograms).
Diet
Herbivores, rabbits are. This means they follow a plant-based diet and do not consume animal products. Grass, clover, and cruciferous plants including broccoli and Brussels sprouts are all part of their diet. They are opportunistic feeders who eat fruits, seeds, roots, buds, and tree bark.
Habitat
Rabbits are now found all over the world, despite their origins in Europe and Africa. Except for southern South America, the West Indies, Madagascar, and much of the islands southeast of Asia, they occupy the majority of the world's land masses.
Characteristics of a Rabbit
Rabbits are highly social animals that live in large communities known as colonies. Dusk and dawn are the busiest times of day for rabbits. This is when they go out in search of food. They will hide from predators because of the low light.
Predators like owls, hawks, eagles, falcons, wild dogs, feral cats, and ground squirrels are still a threat. The rabbit's long legs and ability to run at high speeds for long periods of time are possibly evolutionary adaptations to help them avoid predators.
I took some pictures of a beautiful rabbit in one of the farm in the neighborhood.
