Contest time!! CITY 🏙️ or COUNTRYSIDE 🌳?? // ¡¡Tiempo de concurso!! CIUDAD 🏙️ o CAMPO 🌳??
Each person makes his or her own decision based on their needs. The city has too much bustle and “crazy drivers” for many, but it also has hospitals, doctors, and shopping nearby with cabs and public transportation. If they are already city-dwellers, they may be accustomed to these benefits and want to continue to receive them.
In addition, cities usually have activities for seniors.
Women practicing tai chi in the park in Guangzhou while the men sit around playing cards. Reason #385 why women live longer than men.
The countryside has a slower pace of life and less crowding, but necessities like hospitals are usually fewer and farther between. Especially if the person has always lived in the country, they will almost certainly continue to as long as they can live independently and know people around them.
Extreme sports for the elderly. You could put an eye out with one of those things. She likes purple so she’s created a royal knitting corner for herself, good for her!
Because few old people can safely descend stairs, many adults in late middle age start looking for a home or apartment with no stairs. One-story homes are common in the country, while apartment buildings with elevators are common in the city, so fortunately this situation doesn’t force a choice on a person.
Unless you can afford a chair lift, plan ahead for a stairs-free retirement. Stairs can become a barrier to old folks and a severe fall risk. But I’m not sure I trust these chair lift things, what if it malfunctions and I end up in the attic? Or on the neighbour’s roof?
As time goes on, children or other relatives become more and more important in an old person’s choices. Family can look in on them, take them shopping, and get them to appointments, which all becomes critical once an old person stops driving. And of course social attachments are important for all humans since we are social animals.
Oh no, they’ve learned how to take selfies. Great teeth, I know pianos who would be jealous. I think I’ll go brush my teeth.
Eventually, choices in advanced old age become like choices in infancy: others make decisions for you, ideally ensuring that you receive the care you need. My late uncle had a favourite t-shirt that read “Getting Old Ain’t For Sissies”. But we would usually joke to him that it beat the alternative.
But in the end definitely the city. They are obvious visitation destinations, with a significant portion of the economy devoted to tourism. So there is plenty to do, and the things to do will be pretty varied and easy to locate. While you are hanging out in the city, do your research on places to visit in the countryside, as there are far more choices of destinations, but less to see and do at each one, so you’ll want to choose those journeys carefully. As part of your research, engage with people in the city and find out where they go, or where they would recommend that you go based on your interests.
