Around the world, people are involved in one activity or the other in a bid to make ends meet. Today, I would like to share with you all, one activity people indulge in on a daily basis just to make ends meet. This activity is how lots of people in my locality survive. It helps them foot their bills as well as make ends meet. The proceeds may not be so much but it's been carrying the practitioners. This activity is none other than street trading.

WHAT IS STREET TRADING

Street trading is a trading pattern where people who may be unable to afford stalls or shops, or people who want to take advantage of the crowd at popular junctions or bus stops, display their wares along the road for sale.

It cuts the cost of renting a shop or a stall as the traders only have to pay a daily commission which usually goes to the local chieftains in that community. The commission is a kind of local tax collected by the local authorities in such areas.

With street trading, some people have been able to go to the university, rent apartments in the city, seen their siblings or children through the university, and even purchased a car.

WARES SOLD IN STREET TRADING

Items sold in this trading pattern include clothes, food items, fruits, cosmetics, footwears, clothing accessories, shoe polishes, sewing materials, etc.

EFFECT OF STREET TRADING ON THE REGION'S ECONOMY

It can be a nuisance sometimes when a significant portion of the road is taken over by buyers and sellers, thereby creating traffic congestion on the road. This is one major reason why the government sometimes frowns at street trading especially in some sensitive areas of the state.

Unfortunately, street trading is preferred in those sensitive areas as that's where the sellers are more likely to meet their buyers.

The positive effect street trading has on the economy is that it helps people to make ends meet. A lot of people are surviving by this trading pattern. Since there's no cost incurred for renting, the wares sold are sometimes cheaper and so, oftentimes, people prefer to patronize them.

This is one day to day hustle in my locality. I might talk about another some other time.
