The natural environment around us are the basic components that bring balance to the universe. In the grand scheme of things, everything is vital and necessary. In fact, aside from everything being important, tress and vegetation are even more necessary than most other things.

The lush vegetation.

It is through the trees and other green plants that the carbon di oxide that we send out when we breathe is converted to oxygen gas which all humans need to survive. So trees and plants help to make oxygen available to us. A major concentration of these green plants is in the forests.

Forest holds large volumes of green plants and many stands of trees of various kinds. I live in Nigeria, a tropical country meaning that here we have so much heavy vegetation because of our climate which supports heavy rain fall and thus the presence of tall, huge trees.

There are many large clusters of trees in form of forests in Nigeria. Even in my city of Uyo, there are thousands of forests here. Though in recent years, due to industrialization, building infrastructures like roads and the likes, increase in population, a lot of the primary forests have been destroyed. Need for timber and wood too has influenced the deforestation of many places.

The forest which I want to showcase to you today is the one located at Ikpa road in Uyo. It is called the Uniuyo Forest.

The road that leads down the forest from the University of Uyo.

This is a secondary forest still experiencing afforestation. This forest covers a large area of landmass and extends to reach various different areas in the city.

Various varieties of tress and plants. Notice how the land is fast sloppy.

The forest has a very outstanding feature which is the presence of a deep gully now christened ravine. A major environmental problem in Uyo, is the prevalence of gullies and these fast expanding gullies are posing serious challenges to land management in the city. So, in this Forest, almost everywhere is covered with gullies.

See how low the forest is from this position. The forest is really in depressed land position.

The landscape is really undulating.
I have had the opportunity of going into this forest once. This was when one of my colleague was conducting his final year thesis. As soil scientists we went into pick soil samples for analysis and also be able to delineate various slope forms. In here, we saw various materials. A lot of debris were being dumped here. Also, there was a large collection of water at the foot of the gullies.

The forest is very thick and densely covered by vegetation.

There were also many varieties of trees and shrubs all around the forest.
The forest is mainly used to grow trees and as a conservation spot for endangered tree species. It is also a research location for many of the departments of the University of Uyo. Expeditions are conducted from time to time by several bodies.

Depending on the season, there is always pond activity and accumulation of water in the valley bottoms. The diversity here in terms of kinds and types of trees is highly significant. There are very tall trees like Gmalina, tectona and mahogany. Leguminous broad leave trees like acacia also exist in this forest.

Numerous stands of various timber trees.

For me personally, what I love most about this forest is the serenity and refreshment it offers. No matter how hot the weather is, passing by this place, you will always feel the cold and freshness of the air around here. Everything usually seem so calm and perfect around this forest.
Another attraction for me is the wind. If you are looking for a sweet, calm and nice place to chill out, you only need to simply sit near this forest. Interestingly, this forest is located near the university of Uyo and thus offer a nice reading spot for students.
I know that a lot of resources can be derived from forest. Medically, herbs and extracts can be used to treat various ailments. Food in form of fruits and vegetables can also be gotten from the forest.
Also, the forest acts as a relaxation spot. I for one, love to be around the forest area. It is also a great site for photography especially considering the natural features and the dancing tree branches.
Though I cannot create a forest of my own, I plan to have a lot of fruit trees surrounding my home in future.
